Machine Learning in Sports: A Paradigm Shift in Progress

Sports, data analytics and machine learning. Three words you would never expect to be in the same sentence, right? Well, what if we told you that they already are in the same sentence in sports teams the world over. That’s right, we’re already seeing the inclusion of data analytics and machine learning in sports – some even as early as 15 years ago. You’d be surprised how advanced things have gotten when it comes to data analytics and sports; we’re even seeing companies use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help deal with and store the data.

In sports such as the F1, American football and even rugby we’re seeing more and more decisions being made when taking into consideration probabilities and numbers generated by machine learning. In fact, one of the sports most adept at using data is the Formula 1. Teams generate up to 600GB of data per lap from the 200 to 300 sensors in the cars. When it comes to the American NFL (National Football League) each player is analysed based on over 100 data points. These data points drive the plays we, as fans, cheer and look for when we watch the athletes play.

Dilemma: Where to store the data? How to capitalise on it?

When it comes to dealing with the data generated from these sports, the first dilemma is where to store the data. Of course, Amazon Web Services has a slew of container and data lake services such as Amazon S3 storage and more these teams are already using to store their data. However, just keeping the data in the cloud isn’t enough. They will need to run through and analyse the data for it to truly be useful to the teams. That’s where machine learning comes in.

While it might seem like a brand-new paradigm, we can assure you, that it’s been happening behind the scenes for quite a while. Teams in the F1, NFL and even rugby have been collecting data and analysing them to help players perform better, drivers drive better and engineers optimise their technology further. In fact, there are companies out there such as Pro Football Focus that actually process and analyse the data in real time. In fact, at AWS Re:Invent, Cris Collinsworth, CEO and Co-Founder of Pro Football Focus, said that what used to take coaches around two to three days to analyse is done in less time. He said that with this improvement, coaches are given more time to strategize and tweak their plays to help their teams win.

The data collected during the races of the F1 doesn’t just go to the cloud for storage. Analysts on the ground are constantly looking at it to help tweak and make critical decisions for that edge. In fact, the data plays a big role in the teams pitting and undercutting strategies in a race. The engineers are also using this data to help with their car design and tweaking between races. However, the F1 has a pretty good head start compared to other sports out there. They’ve been using data analytics in their sport for over a decade now and have been able to use it to help with performance. However, that isn’t the only way they use their data, they also use it to create new regulations that affect the whole game and the welfare of the drivers.

With the advent of machine learning in the past few years, the work of analysing the data has been made even easier. In the United States, broadcasters have been experimenting using data lakes and machine learning to enhance the sports viewing experience. This isn’t just restricted to F1, NFL, NBA or the MLB. It’s across the board. These broadcasters are using machine learning to create overlays and explanations of complexities that help fans better understand the sport. In fact, with the amount of data they have at their fingertips, shout casters and commentators are able to see plays before they happen or even suggest some that would have led to a better outcome. These hints of information are also opening up the sports world to new audiences. It is also creating a more engaging experience for long time sports viewers and fans.

Given the amount of data being collected, it also comes as no surprise that broadcasters and even teams are looking into giving fans a better experience via a second screen. Of course, raw data isn’t the answer but the data processed by machine learning algorithms are able to give a better understanding and appreciation to fans. In fact, the thing that makes sports engaging is the human element in the game. It’s about how athletes are able to push boundaries of human performance and how we use the data to improve, not only the game, but also other aspects of human life.

Wearables

In terms wearable items, we have been quite a loyalist to a certain brand. Not because we are fanboys over the brand. We just like the wearable products they produce. I doubt it is a secret that we think that Samsung’s wearable offerings in the market is the best one we have seen on Android devices. They are good value for money, since they are not sold at the price or the Garmins. The Tizen Wear OS is smooth, intuitive, simple to operate. Their battery life is always longer than what we can find on conventional Android wearable devices.

Lenovo Legion to Add Two More in Their Line-up – Lenovo Legion 7i and Legion 5i

We have always said that some of the best value for money PCs come from Lenovo. We say that because while they do not offer the best or the most powerful specs in that class of PCs, they always pack it with not only great build quality, but price them very reasonably. It also does not hurt that their keyboards are one of the best we have ever typed on when it comes to notebook PCs.

This value-for-money concept stretches from their business-line ThinkPads all the way to the gaming Lenovo Legion line. We especially like the Lenovo Legion Y700 and Y500 series. They keep things simple and honest. At the same time, they still offer great value and looks.

This year though the Lenovo Legion Y500 and Y700 series is going to be joined by two newcomers, the 5i and 7i. To be fair, not much are known about the notebook PCs yet, but we can tell you that the Lenovo Legion 7i is coming in with 17-inch screen size and the 5i a 15-incher. We can also tell you that both notebook PC line-up will feature the latest 10th Generation Intel Core H-series processors. We are guessing the 7i will come with Intel’s most powerful and extreme Core i9.

The new series of notebook PCs will also come with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX technology. The 5i will stop at the RTX 2060, presumably to fit a tighter budget. The Lenovo Legion 7i though will pack a Max-Q design NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU.

Gaming notebook PCs are known to be a battery drainer though. No matter the size of the battery, you might run out within 4 hours. That is if you do not game. By the looks of it, the Lenovo Legion 7i and 5i might not have that big of a battery though. Their design focuses more on portability and a thinner form factor. Thanks to an industry first NVIDIA Advanced Optimus technology though, you might get all-day battery life from the Lenovo Legion 7i and 5i. The technology is basically a GPU switch. You get the idea.

At this time, there are no word on availability in Malaysia just yet. Of course, we can safely say that the Lenovo Legion 7i and 5i are coming sometime this year. That said, the Lenovo Legion Y540 and Lenovo Legion Y740 are also getting a refresh of their own with 10th Generation Intel Core H-series and NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER cards. The Lenovo Legion 5i and Lenovo Legion Y540 will be available for US$ 999 (MYR 4,354*). The HUAWEI P40 Series has arrived in Malaysia!

Last week, we saw the HUAWEI P40 series being globally launched. The HUAWEI P40 and the P40 Pro is supposed to come to the market first. The HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus is probably the one you want to go for, but that is going to set you back a lot of money and you have to wait until mid-year 2020. It is also the one that comes with five cameras instead of the measly three of the HUAWEI P40 and the four of the HUAWEI P40 Pro.

In that case, you might have expected the HUAWEI P40 series to arrive in Malaysia a little later, in waiting for the HUAWEI P40 Pro+. That is not the case though. Malaysia is quite a lucky market. Well, if I am quoting them right, Malaysia is one of their key markets in South East Asia. Flattering, no?

That also means that we are one of the first markets also to get HUAWEI’s latest and greatest. That happens today with the HUAWEI P40 series, starting with the HUAWEI P40 and the HUAWEI P40 Pro flagship devices. The HUAWEI P40 Pro+, as was announced in the global launch, will be available at a later date.

Still, the HUAWEI P40 and the HUAWEI P40 Pro are still the flagship device that you have been waiting for since the HUAWEI P30. We found the HUAWEI P30 to be quite brilliant, if we are being honest and we do not expect the HUAWEI P40 devices to be anything less than that. Still we have covered all the necessary spec talk in the global launch, so we are going to spare you the lecture.

Briefly though, the flagship series is powered by none other than HUAWEI’s own HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G capable System on a Chip (SoC) with dedicated dual Neural Processing Units (NPU) for maximum delivery. All of them will come with 8GB of RAM. That is smaller than some of the outgoing flagships now. Then again, who needs more than 8GB? Both flagships will come with a main 50-Megapixel camera.

The only few things that differentiate one from the other is the design cue, their screen sizes, the number of cameras packed at the back, and their price tags. The HUAWEI P40 comes with a regular 6.1-inch display with Full HD display while the Pro comes with a bigger 6.58-inch overflow display with 90Hz and 2,640 by 1,200 pixels for resolution. The HUAWEI P40 comes with three cameras at the back while the HUAWEI P40 Pro comes with four cameras at the back.

The HUAWEI P40 and P40 Pro will be available for pre-order from the 3rd April 2020 (10.08 a.m.) onward via HUAWEI’s online sales portal, various retail partners, or HUAWEI’s Lazada Flagship store and your devices will come to you on the 11th of April onward. You have to keep in mind that while the HUAWEI P40 and P40 Pro are EMUI 10 devices based on Android 10, they do not come with Google’s Play Store. The HUAWEI P40 flagship series will come in four colours for now – Black, Blush Gold, Deep Sea Blue, and Silver Frost. I must say that I really like the Silver Frost.

Alongside the HUAWEI P40 series, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro has also arrived in Malaysia. The HUAWEI MatePad variant that is coming to Malaysia though is the WiFi edition one, not the 5G ready one. It is available in two colours – Midnight Grey and Pearl White. It will also be available for pre-order at the same time the HUAWEI P40 series is available for pre-order on the 3rd April 2020 for MYR 2,399. If you do, you get a keyboard case, the M-Pen, and 3-month free subscription for HUAWEI Video worth MRY 1,000.

There is also the HUAWEI Watch GT 2e that is designed for the active lifestyle. The HUAWEI Watch GT 2e can last you two weeks on a single charge and will come in two colours – Mint Green and Graphite Black. It will also be available for pre-order at the same time for MYR 599. This comes as an enhancement to the now essential features of any fitness tracker including customisable watch faces, notifications and even sleep tracking.

The Fitbit Charge 4 introduces Active Zone Minutes. This is developed based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association. Both organisations recommend that everyone should have 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigourous activity weekly. Based on this recommendation, the Charge 4 will track your heart rate with Fitbit’s PurePulse 24/7 heart tracking. Using personalised data, it will determine how much effort you are exerting for an activity. This will allow for better tracking. In fact, the Charge 4 will be able to notify you each time you enter or exit zones. This will allow you to better optimise your workouts. If you want to get more detailed data, it’s accessible via the Fitbit App.

The Charge 4 comes with a promised 7 days battery life or 5 hours if you’re continuously using GPS. It is water resistant up to 50 metres and is swimproof. According to Fitbit the Charge 4 is able to operate between -20° to 60° C and up to an altitude of 8,535m.

The Charge 4 will be available in stores starting late April. The regular version will retail for MYR 698. It will be available in black, rosewood and storm blue/black. The Special Edition will be available at MYR 798 in granite reflective/black wooven band. It will also come with a classic band for when you workout.

Garmin Goes Golfing with the Approach S62 Smartwatch

We like Garmin smartwatches, we do. While some of them are not specifically smartwatches in the modern sense (touch screen), they do still work like one. They connect via Bluetooth to your smartphone. They can be connected to your earphones for exercises and runs. They detect your heartrate and display all the information it can gather on your smartphone. They also take on notifications from your smartphones. So, the Garmin fitness trackers are smartwatches, unique smartwatches.

We like Garmin smartwatches because they are very well made. They are very rugged too, and their smartwatch batteries last you weeks instead of hours or days. Plus, their expertise in GPS tracking does not hurt as well. They are remarkable premium smartwatches to own.

In that sense also, Garmin has been making smartwatches that is targeted towards certain types of individuals. Most of them are quite active, to be fair. You get runners, swimmers, sailors, flyers, and even race drivers.

They also make smartwatches for golfers that is the Approach S40 and the S60. There is a new one though, an even better one. Welcome to the Approach S62.

The Garmin Approach 62 is an evolution of the Approach S60. That also means that it has all the great features of the Approach S60. It is a touch screen smartwatch, so you do not have to fiddle around with the buttons. At the same time, it has all the tracking functions you need on the golf course. It keeps all the distance information and scores for you so you can look at the data at home.

The new Garmin Approach S62 though can do one better. It has a slew of new sensors for swing detection. Now you can look at your past swings and let the watch determine which clubs are the best for each shot from wherever you are. Yes, the Approach series has golf course map data built into the smartwatch. They call the feature ‘Virtual Caddie’.

The Garmin Approach S62 smartwatch also features slightly bigger display at 1.3-inch. While it does not sound like much, a larger screen also means you do not have to squint so much to find your data or look at what is on the display. Of course, like a smartwatch too it has all the bells and whistles you might already expect from a smartwatch like heart rate monitors, oxygen saturation levels and what not.

You can expect the Approach S62 to last you up to 14 days on a single charge. With GPS mode on, you cut that down to 20 hours. Look at it this way though, you are not going to be walking around the golf course for 20 hours at a time. 20 hours is more than enough then.

The Approach S62 is available for pre-order via Garmin’s brand stores and MST golf stores across Malaysia. It will set you back MYR 2,399; more expensive than the Approach S60. You cannot technically go out to buy the Approach S62 now though because of the whole Movement Control Order (MCO) situation. Pre-orders are until the 30th of April 2020 though so you have about two weeks to pre-order one for yourself. If you do pre-order, you get MYR 259 worth of Garmin’s golf merchandises (while stocks last).

COVID-19 isn’t Just a Biological Pandemic, It’s A Cyber Security Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most unprecedented events to have occurred in the past decade. In fact, the last time a major pandemic hit was in the 1910s. Since then, there have been milder pandemics which have occurred more recently in 2009 (Influenza A H1N1). The world has changed drastically since these pandemics. That said, the fact that the world is so interconnected and digitally dependent, makes the COVID-19 pandemic even more unique.

It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that with the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve learnt that pandemics aren’t just about being biologically compromised anymore. In fact, Flavo Aggio, the Chief Information Security Officer at the World Health Organisation (WHO) attributes more than 15,000 deaths worldwide in this pandemic alone to the cyber attacks that healthcare agencies such as WHO face on daily basis. What’s more apparent is the number of cyber attacks related to COVID-19 have increased substantially since the pandemic began. Great Horn, a cloud-based security platform, reports that currently about 2% of email traffic related to COVID-19 comes from malicious players looking to get access to pertinent, personal information. Other security companies have reported that the number of cyber attacks linked to the COVID-19 pandemic have more than doubled since its emergence.

Proof is in the Pudding – Increased Cyber Attacks are putting Patients& People at risk

In the most recent attack against the WHO, a malicious hacker group known as DarkHotel setup a site to mimic WHO’s internal email page in an effort to get login information of WHO employees to access sensitive information. The group’s activities were first detected by Alexander Urbleis, a cyber security expert and attorney at Blackstone Law Group in New York. Urbelis mentions that he detected the site’s activation on 13 March.

This attack comes from the group after it vowed not to attack healthcare agencies and research centers during the pandemic. That said, the WHO was able to fend off the attack without getting compromised.

However, this hasn’t been the only COVID-19 based attack. During the same time, Brno University Hospital was forced to shutdown their technological services. This was due to a breach in cybersecurity which forced the hospital to take preventative measures. The attack compromised the health of all of the patients who required advanced testing. It forced doctors and nurses to chart manually which caused delays in care.

Perhaps more alarming is how hacker groups have also been targeting research centers and pharmaceuticals. Hammersmith Medicines Research (HMR), one of the companies involved in developing a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, reported that it was part of a ransomware attack. This attack compromised the information of about 2,300 patients involved in trials. The group behind the attack demanded money after gaining access to the files. These patient files have since found their way to the dark web, making them vulnerable to further compromise.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that while malefactors are targeting healthcare institutions and companies, the ones who truly pay the price are the patients. With their data at risk and treatments being delayed or interrupted, we are seeing a larger, more worrying pool of victims.

Compromised Cyber Security Could have Lasting Effects

That is only the tip of the iceberg. With pertinent patient information in the wild, these patients have been exposed to a larger cyber threat; one that could be even more devastating to them after the pandemic. Information such as their addresses, social security and passport details are now available online – if you know where to find it. Another question remains: “Were these patients informed of such a data breach?”.

With the compromised information, malicious players will be able to gain access to a number of things including bank accounts and other important accounts. In fact, hackers will able to social engineer this information to gain access to emails, social media and more by simply connecting the dots. The fact of the matter is, most passwords and logins are linked to a person’s social history or items like their social security numbers.

These breaches have potential psychological and physical repercussions that not many are aware of. Being the subject of a data breach or having an email or bank account compromised as a result will result in lost time and psychological stress. Keep in mind, that some of these attacks hold your vital information ransom and demand for money. This would definitely lead to increased anxiety.

It can’t be any more obvious that we are in an age where our digital lives are increasing intertwined with our daily lives. Even in an epidemic, we are seeing the effects of cyber attacks on our daily lives Hence, with attacks on the rise, users like you and me must also take precautions to protect our digital footprint. It is as essential as washing our hands and avoiding touching our face in this pandemic.

We can start with one simple step – pay attention to the details. Kaspersky has reported that there has been an uptick in look-a-like domains since the onset of the COVID-19. In particular, when it comes to authoritative domains. In particular, they’ve highlighted an email supposedly from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) in America. The official domain for the CDC is cdc.gov; however, emails have been sent from an email from cdc-gov.org. The small difference when it comes to this domain could be the difference between getting compromised or getting official information.

The next step you can take is, like washing hands, spend a little time refreshing your passwords. Good password hygiene is essential to keeping your information secured. Look at changing your passwords on a bi-monthly, if not monthly basis. If you’re working in an industry that requires heightened security and privacy, you know that they have policies that require you to change your password every 3 months, at the very least. So, why are you worth any less?

One of the most basic things you can do for increased security is to activate two factor authentication (2FA). When you activate 2FA, you will be prompted to give an additional item for authentication. This will help verify your identity. That said, activating 2FA is no excuse not to change your password on a regular basis.

With these steps as a starting point, you’ll have better security on the internet. That said, it’s just a start. Don’t get too comfortable with yourself when it comes to internet security. With more and more attacks focused on taking advantage of lapses of judgement, we need to be more alert. Even when we’re searching for information, it’s important we pay attention to the details, check website addresses and keep vigilant on the links in your email. While things may seem bleak, it’s no excuse to stay away from the internet. Just be more alert and vigilant and enjoy one of the best inventions since sliced bread.

The 2020 MSI Creator 17 With Mini LED – A World First

Creators, in a lot of sense, are like gamers. Before you deny, let us look at the facts. People in the creative industry, especially designers, videographers, photographers, or 3D artists need a powerful PC. The more power, the better. Gamers need a lot of power as well to get the best sort of experience in the gaming world – a sort of immersive escape from the real world.

Creators, especially ones that are in the 3D design space needs a lot of computing power to render 3D spaces and designs. Gamers play a lot of 3D games and need plenty of rendering power from their PC to render whatever that is coded into the game smoothly and beautifully, as intended by the designers. Conclusion? With the new MSI Creator 17, you are now getting a display like no other. They call it a Mini LED display. The technology of which, we have not understood fully yet. What we know though is that it is supposedly better than OLED and IPS displays in terms of colour reproduction. It is DCI-P3 100% certified, which also means you get very accurate colours.

The 17.3-inch Mini LED display pushes up to 4K in resolution. It is also a Display HDR 1000 display with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. That is bright; really bright. You might want to consider lowering the brightness in a dark room, else you get blind.

The MSI Creator 17 packs the power too with an NVIDIA GeForce 2080 SUPER (up to) and Intel’s 10th Generation Core i7-107875H processor. You can choose to slot in two SSD’s within the notebook for an uninterrupted workflow. They did not mention how much RAM you can get it with, but we can safely assume that you can slot in at least a 32GB RAM stick into it.
