Living with HUAWEI Mobile Services and AppGallery Part 3: Hey, We Got a New Phone!

We started this journey over two weeks ago. We also switched to a HUAWEI P40 Pro review unit last week as an HMS test device on a full-time basis. Starting it up and starting afresh, we thought we might want to give the HUAWEI device the best chance it has to stack up against all the other Android devices we encountered. That is why, rather than loading it with the set-up we had on the HUAWEI Nova 7i, we went with Phone Clone to get it to clone a HUAWEI Mate 20X I owned.

The result of that was the transfer of more than just the apps we had on the HUAWEI Nova 7i. We had more than we bargained with Prime Video and Telegram ported in. We had Facebook and Instagram ported too, alongside some of our favourite games like Brawl Starts and PUBG Mobile. More about Phone Clone app and the HUAWEI P40 Pro in our in-depth review later though. Note that the HUAWEI P40 Pro is a review unit and it is due for a return soon. So we only have a limited time with HUAWEI’s latest photography king and switch back to the Nova 7i.

Phone Clone is The Way to Go

The point is you can still run Android apps on the HUAWEI’s EMUI 10. It is still an Android 10 device after all. Well, just be sure that everything runs nicely. We found that Instagram will not turn over on the HUAWEI P40 Pro. It could just be a device issue, but that is quite annoying to us. The upgrade also comes with a big step up in the camera of course. But that is not our focus today.

The focus today is to test it out as a daily driver for the week. We popped in the YES 4G SIM card we had for our review devices and its ready to roll. Okay, it is ready to somewhat roll.

Of course, we had our concerns with the apps. For one, there is now no official support for the apps. Where do we update the apps? How do we update the apps? If I’m transferring WhatsApp from my older device, do I use Gmail still? We may not be able to answer all the questions you and I have.

Right out of the box, if you did not use Phone Clone to copy your WhatsApp data over to your new HUAWEI device, you are going to lose everything. If you use Phone Clone and WhatsApp did not copy its complete data over, you lose everything. There is no carry over of backup data because HUAWEI cannot back up to Gmail now. It is like switching from an Apple device to Android device. That is kind of a bummer.

We found a solution to that though, from HUAWEI’s own community site. It is not the simplest instructions to follow, because there is a lot of navigation around restoring your WhatsApp data in your HUAWEI smartphone. If you want to give it try you can head to their website. It still works (sort of) on the HUAWEI Nova 7i and HUAWEI P40 Pro as well. So that should not be too big of an issue.

We found that installing Google Drive may not work as well, because you cannot actually sign into your Google account. That, and a lot of other Google apps. At least you get your WhatsApp chat history back, right? You have to jump through some hoops, yes; but it works.

We did not manage to get Netflix ported over, or even working for that matter. At least Amazon’s Prime Video works well though. We cannot tell if it is only streaming in HD quality or not, but it works at least, and that is now part of our entertainment.

The next challenge is to update the apps. For that, we started using APKPure and Aptoide. Mind you, you cannot get these two app markets on AppGallery too, so you have to download them from their respective mirror sites.

New in AppGallery

Since we last spoke about the AppGallery though, there has been some additions to the ecosystem. There are some new apps there and here. A lot of which, we are not concerned about. One of which, could be interesting for residents of Malaysia. The MySejahtera app developed by Malaysia’s ministry of health to keep yourself in check of your own health status in the COVID-19 situation now. Of course, during the Movement Control Order restrictions now, food is important, and you have Dahmakan app in the HUAWEI device anyway. Nope, no others so far. Not even Grab.

You could, theoretically get Grab working on your HUAWEI through Phone Clone as well. Again, there is going to be update issues later. But I guess we can cross that bridge when we get there.

Still, if you are going to rely on the AppGallery solely, Dahmakan is your best friend.

Quick Apps is a function that is on the HUAWEI AppGallery and a feature like no other. It is a sort of ‘pre-installed’ kit for devices with the AppGallery. They idea is that you can just access the Quick Apps gallery, pick the apps you want to use, and launch it without installing it. Where is it installed? In the cloud perhaps. But the essential point is that you can just use the apps as long as you are connected to the internet.

That is what the McDonald’s app is on the HUAWEI AppGallery, a Quick App. Of course, you need an active internet connection anyway for the app to work in the first place, so it does make plenty of sense. It also does not take up any space on your smartphone which is quite clever as well; a way to save storage space on your smartphone, if you might.

You can even add the app on your home screen so you can access it again anytime after your first visit. Just hit the app menu and add it to your home screen, very easy. We are not sure it is the most convenient way to discover an app though, because it is lodged very far down the AppGallery. You have to scroll all the way down to find the separate Quick Apps gallery.

Still, better than nothing right? There are plenty games within that gallery, none of which we play. Because the AppGallery is not segregated from one country to another yet, you can also find some broadcast apps on the platform. It is an interesting platform, if used correctly. Why not have WhatsApp there too? That is an idea.

HKBN Announces Interim Results for the 6 Months Ended 29 February 2020

HONG KONG, April 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — HKBN Ltd. (“HKBN” or the “Company”; SEHK stock code: 1310) today announced solid growth in its financial and business performance for the six months ended 29 February 2020 (“1H2020”). Through a sequence of five strategic mergers and acquisitions over the last few years, culminating most recently with the acquisition of JOS completed in December 2019, HKBN has further bolstered its capabilities as an integrated telecom and technology solutions provider. The most recent JOS acquisition has greatly extended HKBN’s customer reach, broadened the scope of its service offerings and enhanced its market competitiveness in the enterprise space.

Key highlights from the interim period include:

  • Revenue, EBITDA and Adjusted Free Cash Flow (“AFF”) continued to grow year-on-year 101%, 77% and 47%, respectively, to HK$4,457 million, HK$1,283 million and HK$440 million. The substantial year-on-year increase was mainly contributed by:
    • consolidating six months of results of HKBN Enterprise Solutions Development Ltd and its subsidiaries (collectively “WTT Group”) with revenue and EBITDA contribution of HK$1,104 million and HK$509 million;
    • consolidating two and a half months of results of HKBN JOS Holdings (C.I.) Limited and its subsidiaries, Adura Hong Kong Limited and Adura Cyber Services Pte. Ltd. (“collectively “JOS Group”) with revenue and EBITDA contribution of HK$836 million and HK$57 million; and
    • reducing operating lease expenses of HK$106 million in the calculation of EBITDA, after adopting HKFRS 16.
  • Enterprise revenue increased by 190% year-on-year to HK$2,276 million after consolidating six months and two and a half months of operating results of WTT Group and JOS Group, respectively, in 1H2020. Total number of enterprise customers increased year-on-year to 104,000 while enterprise ARPU increased from HK$1,508 to HK$2,775.
  • Residential revenue grew by 2% year-on-year to HK$1,252 million from the successful execution of a quad-play strategy. This enabled the Company to increase its historical full base residential ARPU by 3% year-on-year, from HK$184/month in 1H2019 to HK$190/month in 1H2020, while the monthly churn rate remained low.
  • The Board of Directors has recommended the payment of an interim dividend of 37 HK cents (1H2019: 34 HK cents per share), resulting in a 9% year-on-year growth.

935 Co-Owners = Unprecedented Management Alignment

“In crisis there is opportunity. Our Co-Ownership culture is our most distinct and important LUCA (Legal Unfair Competitive Advantage). Our Talent force of 5,861, including those from JOS and WTT, is now led by 935 Co-Owners who have invested their family savings in HKBN. Most impressively, the Co-Ownership take-up for our top 73 executives is 100%, which demonstrates incredible alignment of interest amongst our leadership team,” said Co-Owner and Executive Vice-chairman William Yeung, and Co-Owner and Group CEO NiQ Lai.

Appendix:

Shareholder Letter

Dear Fellow HKBN Shareholders,

#ToughTimesTogether

We are committed to our pursuit of Purposeful profit even during toughest times. Whilst the global COVID-19 crisis is impacting all of us, HKBN is one of the fortunate companies that continues to grow through this crisis, so we are in an exceptional situation whereby we can do good and do well. In February 2020, we launched our #ToughTimesTogether initiatives to help alleviate economic impact of the crisis, starting with waiving of our February 2020 service fees for our residential fixed-services and corporate customers, followed by 10,000 free broadband services for families in financial difficulties, and offering three months of fixed contract work experience for 100 fresh graduates. In doing these, we hope to inspire other purpose-driven companies to act, and together make a far bigger impact.

HKBN is a Talent-obsessed company; in fact, HKBN is nothing but a Talent company. All our business hardware and software can be replicated with enough money and time, but our cultural DNA is impossible to replicate. At HKBN, we believe we must first WOW our 5,861 Talents before we can together WOW other stakeholders such as customers, business partners, shareholders etc.

Just a year ago, we were three competitors, being HKBN, WTT and JOS. Today, we are one entity of 5,861 HKBNers led by 935 Co-Owners (refer to the QR code below) who now share one common “elite sports team” bank account for our family savings. Our culture is based on “pride” of common success leading to individual success, rather than the “envy” that is the disease of many legacy companies. When an HKBNer is doing well, be it on our Co-Ownership upside, pain/GAIN payout, earning higher commissions etc., we know that we are all aligned and contributing to each other’s success. “Pride” in each other’s success is why we do not set caps in sales commissions, as we are happy to see a top performing sales person earn more in total compensation via commissions, than managers above them. Conversely, when an HKBNer does poorly on any of the above, we all suffer together; hence this makes us work smarter together to avoid this pain.

Whilst the economy is currently facing unprecedented headwinds, times of crisis create opportunity for legacy market change. With our recent sequence of acquisitions and the completion of our Co-Ownership III Plus Scheme, we have completely transformed into an integrated telecom and technology solutions provider. At HKBN, we believe in “eat what we cook first, before we sell it”. Today we are undergoing a massive internal digital transformation which in turn we will sell externally as Transformation as a Service (“TaaS”) to help our customers.

We expect that COVID-19 will structurally slow down global business-as-usual economic activities but force massive demand for business transformations; it is the latter that we are focused on for growth. In short, we are optimistic of the mid-term future.

Sincerely yours,

William Yeung

Lenovo Learn From Home – A New Type of Ambassador

If you look into the PC market these days, you see nearly the same things from every other manufacturer. It has been that way for a while now actually. Every mainstream brand goes with their usual line-up, then there is the high-end professional line-up, a mainstream and high-end gaming line-up, and now, they have the high-end creative industry line-up. There is one segment that many manufacturers are not taking enough advantage of though. That is the student market.

It is a completely different market compared to what the other markets are serving you see. In this segment, consumers are looking to buy value-for-money portable set-up that they are comfortable to work with. Preferably you have something at 14-inch to 15-inch of display, large enough to easily browse through documents and rifle through research papers. It is also large enough to enjoy YouTube and Netflix when they need to relax. Of course, the main aim is to get work done on it. It has to be able to comfortably run excel files, easily create attractive and purposeful PowerPoints, and write long essays away from the charging port preferably.

Lenovo has a number of things that they are already doing to make their Notebook PCs more appealing to students. One of which is to bundle Microsoft’s whole office offering for students into their value Notebook PC line-ups. Their new strategy is to find a completely new kind of brand ambassador.

Source: Lenovo

Their new IdeaPad Slim 1, IdeaPad S145, and ThinkBook 14 Notebook PCs are included under their “Learn From Home” package. The Notebook PCs prices starts from MYR 999, MYR 2,049, and MYR 3,399 respectively. Selected devices will get the Students package with Microsoft Office 365 Student access.

They are looking for a full-time student to be their new ambassador this time. Of course, there are some criteria other than being a full-time student and being able to verify that status. The candidate has to also be active in their campus activities as a student. Interested participants also have to be active on social media and be a registered Member of Lenovo’s Education Store

If selected, the ambassadors will be exclusively invited to watch Lenovo Tech Talks. The Tech Talks are kind of product launch events or even concept show cases. Selected students will also get to participate in the Q&A sessions that happens within the events.

They also get direct access to Lenovo team members as part of a sort of a mentorship program. Students can speak to Lenovo team members in virtual office hours to gain skills that may be essential to their career path or as entrepreneurs. All this, on top of a 15% discount referral code they can use and share with friends or family members to purchase selected Lenovo devices listed under the “Learn From Home” program.

Eligible students may apply for Lenovo Malaysia’s Student Ambassador program or find out more about the program on Lenovo Malaysia’s website. All participants will be awarded with a certificate of participation to be added to their portfolio. At least you tried, you know. If you are selected though, you might be featured in one of Lenovo’s Quarterly Student Ambassador newsletter. SAS and IIASA call for crowd-driven artificial intelligence to help track deforestation

SINGAPORE, April 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — SAS is committed to building a global community of innovators that use technology to ignite positive change for people and the planet. This Earth Day, SAS and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are implementing the next generation of crowd-driven artificial intelligence (AI) to help power AI algorithms designed to help us better understand our planet.

IIASA is an independent, international research institute that is known for its expertise in systems analysis and providing policy solutions and baseline information on pressing concerns for humanity. IIASA is placing a spotlight on the issue of deforestation to learn about the application of AI to elucidate the interconnectivity of Earth’s ecosystems. Today, our systems are changing rapidly, approaching levels that exceed existing human experiences, scientific understanding and traditional modeling capabilities, making it increasingly difficult for humans to intervene efficiently, effectively and timeously.

“The urgency required to address these transformations requires the application of best of breed technology solutions. That’s why we turned to SAS,” said Albert van Jaarsveld, CEO at IIASA. “By combining the power of our environmental science research platforms, SAS’ AI and computer vision technologies, and the sheer intellectual power of concerned citizens, we will develop AI models that will exponentially increase the value of human insights and strive to deliver near real-time assessment of global environmental change.”

Powerful, accurate, useful AI models do not happen by magic. The development of an AI model starts with human intelligence. For this project, SAS and IIASA are jointly launching an online crowdsource-driven app to gather the collective intelligence of the crowd. They are asking volunteers — an army of citizen scientists from middle school students in today’s virtual classrooms to artists, engineers and professional data scientists — to kick-start this effort by reviewing and judging images of the rainforest. These images show land untouched and land that may have been affected by human development.

“Since image analysis is an important first step for the accurate assessment and projection of deforestation, we are asking people to see what technology can’t see, by examining and reporting on images of smaller incremental forestry incursions worldwide,” said van Jaarsveld. “Crowdsourcing helps improve the AI algorithms, expediting what used to take years to analyze, thus helping to drive vital policy responses to protect our forests more quickly.”

When people flag regions that have seen signs of human impact, they help make AI models become smarter. For example, it is easy for a human to distinguish between a road (which signals human impact) and a river (which does not), but an AI model will not know the difference until it obtains sufficient training through learning from human observations. Additionally, results from the model ensure that the crowdsourcing app focuses the attention of human judges where their expertise is most needed. The model will allow for increased efficiency of a volunteer human force that best makes use of their attention and insights for a broad array of projects aimed at monitoring and measuring important global change matters.

With the power of the crowd and the computer combined, SAS and IIASA will have a robust, extensive platform for empowering citizen scientists to assist in cutting-edge research that helps us all better understand, predict and thrive in the world we share. While the first phase of this partnership focuses on deforestation, there are plans to extend this platform to other environmental concerns where crowdsourcing can help serve the greater good.

As a start, everyone can play a role in making AI smarter and improve its ability to help protect our forests. From students who are currently out of the classroom to AI professionals and everyone in between, this activity allows each of us to make a difference just by looking at a few images. Head to sas.com/rainforest to categorize images that show signs of deforestation and help models learn and improve at each iteration.

This crowdsourcing partnership with IIASA is fueled by SAS’ commitment to both data literacy and the Data for Good movement, which encourages using data in meaningful ways to drive positive global change.

TAL’s AI Team Wins Championship Award at a Top International Academic Contest

BEIJING, April 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The international Conference of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR2020), one of the top Artificial Intelligence academic conference, has recently revealed the grant challenge results in a series of categories. TAL’s AI Lab has won the EmotioNet Challenge, an award for human facial expression recognition, surpassing 69 other teams from around the world.

Demonstrating China’s AI competitiveness to world by winning the top-notch AI academic conference

Known as the Olympic Games of computer vision field, CVPR will be held in Seattle, Washington, USA in June 2020. The EmotioNet Challenge is one of the most revered academic competitions in the field of human facial expression recognition. The research methods used to tackle this challenge have been published on CVPR and ICCV (International Conference of Computer Vision), two of the top three computer vision conferences in the world. Over the years, the event has attracted a large number of teams from top universities and companies worldwide.

EmotioNet 2020, sponsored by CVPR and Ohio State University, has attracted teams from Alibaba, China University of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Nanyang Technological University, and other organizations. After fierce competition, TAL’s AI Lab won the championship, demonstrating TAL’s growing AI technology capabilities to the world.

In the competition, TAL’s AI Lab has proposed a solution to the inconsistencies of overfitting during multitask learning in human facial expression recognition, which has significantly improved the accuracy and the F-score of the model. It is one of the many AI abilities that TAL has been able to develop and applied to multiple TAL products and services. Currently, this technology is also made available to the entire education industry through TAL’s Open AI Platform.

Enlarging investments in the AI technology R&D for wider applications

Applying AI technology to the education products is often challenging due to the lack of data covering all forms of educational products and services.

Over the past decade, TAL has accumulated a massive amount of data and has continued exploring various education settings such as face-to-face (in-person), online one-to-one, online dual-teacher, and other methods of teaching. Understanding the changing demands with data generated from various types of education products, TAL is in a good position to further develop “AI + Education” technologies for students. The AI models improve as the types of TAL education products continue to grow.

TAL education group consistently steps up its efforts in research and engineering development. The AI Lab, the Brain Science Lab, the Silicon Valley R&D Center, the Big Data Center, and the Postdoctoral Workstation were all founded to better fulfill TAL’s mission, “Making education better with love, science, and technology”.

TAL keeps breaking new ground in the research and development of cutting-edge technologies. Last November, Hurun Research Institute listed its AI Intellectual Property in China 2019. A list comparing over 500 Chinese AI Companies based on their comprehensive development, innovation abilities, and technology maturity. TAL is ranked among the top 10. TAL also attended the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2020, in February of this year. With the team’s two latest research findings, TAL was invited to take the lead in organizing two symposiums on “smart education”.

TAL has developed more than 100 AI capabilities for education in eight categories including graphics, voice, data mining, and natural language processing, etc. It has created more than 10 AI solutions based on different education scenarios, covering all aspects of teaching, learning, testing, exercises, and assessment. TAL has also developed many unique and/or leading abilities throughout the process of building its own AI platforms. This includes: containing infrastructure for storage, annotation, training, and online services.

Building a new diversified ecosystem for smart education in China

Education AI has been growing vigorously in recent years. As a leading company in the education sector, TAL is actively promoting the joint development of “AI+Education” and the advancement of education sector with its partners.

In August 2019, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China approved TAL to build the National Smart Education Platform for Open Innovation of Next Generation AI. This initiative means that TAL has officially become the “national team” behind exploring “Education+AI”. The platform is expected to support the thorough integration of AI and education, letting smart education empower all stakeholders and improve teaching efficiency, management, and the opening-up of schools.

The National Smart Education Platform for Open Innovation of Next Generation AI will concentrate on learners, enhancing core links between education and education services step by step. By promoting supply-side reform of the education service sector, the platform strives to both increase productivity and cut the cost among education. Through breakthroughs, distribution of education resources, and realizing data-driven individualized teaching at scale, it will bring changes to educational concepts and models. Meanwhile, the R&D threshold for small to medium enterprises, as well as the risk in commercialization for education institutions, will be lowered. The enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship in smart education will be unleashed.

TAL has technological partnerships with Tsinghua University, Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Normal University and Stanford University, jointly contributing to an open tech ecosystem ranging across both public and private institutions.

TAL Education Group expresses its aspiration to work with all stakeholders to meet learners’ core needs, solving major issues in the application of smart education, and furthering the development of education industry. Focusing on broad AI technologies and platform-based services, TAL wishes to establish an AI open innovation platform for smart education that features independent and controllable basic software and hardware. An open exchange of general technology, data, effective application, and a vibrant innovation ecosystem; this will eventually create a new and diversified smart education ecosystem. A symbiotic environment that is made to cover all methods and scenarios within education.
