UNL, Akoin and Venturerock Team Up to Launch Human Unlimited #tech4good Foundation

SINGAPORE, May 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Global tech companies UNL, Akoin and Venturerock have teamed up to launch Human Unlimited foundation to use #tech4good and fuel the fight against COVID-19, future pandemics and disasters.

UNL, Akoin and Venturerock Team Up to Launch Human Unlimited #tech4good Foundation
UNL, Akoin and Venturerock Team Up to Launch Human Unlimited #tech4good Foundation

The foundation supports and accelerates initiatives and ventures that leverage technology as a catalyst to transform and elevate human reality within developing regions, starting with Africa, India and Southeast Asia. “Our focus is set on accelerating long-term tech solutions for battling the first, second and third waves of the virus, to bring back balance post COVID-19 and being ready for a fast, universal response when future disasters strike,” says Xander van der Heijden, CEO of UNL.

The human and economic costs of COVID-19 are projected to be most devastating for developing countries which lack the infrastructure to contain the spread and provide health security. In the short term, Human Unlimited is launching the Human Care app and the Human Frequency music relief campaign to empower people in developing countries to protect themselves and their communities.

“People suffering from COVID-19 and other pandemics need an ongoing end-to-end system to aggressively fight these human battles,” said Akon. “We created HUMAN CARE to map those in need of support during these trying times. Our HUMAN FREQUENCY music and awareness platform was built to raise the necessary funds to bring real relief to those directly in need,” – Akon

An estimated 4 billion people globally are unaddressed, making vital services like emergency help inaccessible and patients hard to reach. Powered by UNL’s smart addressing infrastructure, Human Care gives universal addresses to people anywhere to enable access to essential services like emergency and health responses, and navigation to bring people in need to important hubs, such as hospitals and relief centers, faster. The application promotes social responsibility practices through tools for self-identifying and self-monitoring symptoms, and encourages collaboration between people and local governments, contributing to safer public environments.

In future releases, Human Care will be introducing an incentive mechanism to stimulate positive behavior and self-monitoring. Powered by Akon’s Akoin, the application will be rewarding users for contributing their data and insights about new and developing cases, starting with Africa.

Through Human Care, individuals who have been affected by COVID-19 can self-identify in need, request relief in the form of food, medical supplies and other essentials and get it delivered even to the most remote locations in Africa, India and SEA.

Alongside the application, Human Unlimited is launching the Human Frequency campaign, a rolling series of at-home musical events to unite, invite and heal with the lyrics, beats and melodies of some of the world’s most-recognized musicians and new international artists, led by Akon. Funds raised during the Human Frequency series will go to COVID-19 relief for the ones identified in need via the Human Care app and to support the acceleration of new #tech4good solutions.

Human Unlimited is not doing this alone. The #tech4good foundation has already partnered with global companies, organizations and charities, including HERE Technologies, UN Blockchain Commission, PVBLIC Foundation, WeGiveToCare – Red Cross, Akoin Foundation and the People’s Prize.

The Globe and Mail’s Sophi Wins Best Digital News Start-Up Award

TORONTO, May 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Globe and Mail’s automation and predictive paywall engine, Sophi.io, won WAN-IFRA’s North American Digital Media Award in the category of Best Digital News Start-Up.

Sophi.io by The Globe and Mail
Sophi.io by The Globe and Mail

“Very impressed with Sophi,” the judges wrote in explaining their decision. “The most important and attractive piece from the creation of this AI is that editorial input was key to it. In many newsrooms, the business models undermine the value of their key product, but from this presentation it’s evident that it was not the case for The Globe and Mail.”

The awards honour news publishers from Canada and the U.S. that have created unique and original digital media projects. Sophi also took second place in the awards’ Best Paid Content Strategy category, in recognition of Sophi for Paywalls, its complex natural-language processing and user behaviour-based predictive paywalling technology.

The artificial intelligence system is also a finalist in the International News Media Association’s Global Media Awards, rewarding innovation and excellence in growing audience, brand, and revenue, in the Best New Technology or Digital Product category. Additionally, Sophi is a finalist in the Digiday Media Awards, recognizing companies working to modernize digital media, in two categories: Best Digital Product Innovation and Best Revenue Diversification Strategy.

Sophi was developed by The Globe and Mail to help the newsroom make important strategic and tactical decisions. It is a suite of tools that includes Sophi Automation and Sophi for Paywalls as well as Sophi Analytics, a newsroom decision-support system.

Sophi Automation autonomously places 99% of the content on all of The Globe and Mail’s digital pages, including its homepage and section pages. This lets the newsroom focus on producing the finest journalism possible and has been so successful that it is now being used for print laydown as well.

Sophi for Paywalls analyses both user and content propensity and determines which content should automatically be put behind a hard-paywall, where the subscription revenue opportunity is many times greater than the advertising revenue forgone. It has uncovered millions of dollars in untapped revenue for The Globe and Mail.

Phillip Crawley, Publisher and CEO of The Globe and Mail, said: “It’s an honour for Sophi to be named the best digital media start-up. We are always looking to innovate, and Sophi has brought us tremendously valuable insights over the years, as well as freed up our journalists to do what only they can do. We are pleased to share this powerful engine with other publishers and help transform the industry with this tool.”

As a North American award winner, Sophi is now a contender for the WAN-IFRA World Digital Media Awards, where the winners from North America, Latin America, Asia, Europe, Africa, India, and the Middle East compete.

About The Globe and Mail and Sophi.io

The Globe and Mail is Canada’s foremost news media company, leading the national conversation and effecting policy change through brave, independent journalism since 1844. The Globe and Mail’s award-winning coverage of business, politics and national affairs reaches 6 million readers every week in print and online. The Globe believes the future of journalism lies in its ability to bring readers the stories they both want and need to know. That’s why the company invested in innovative data science and hired data scientists from leaders in the tech industry to develop Sophi.io – an artificial intelligence system with predictive capabilities – and used it to automate content curation and promotion.

Meituan Demonstrates its Contributions with the 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

BEIJING, May 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Meituan Dianping (HKG: 3690), China’s leading e-commerce platform for services, today released its 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report (or “the Report”) to demonstrate how the company has created value for users, industry and society through platform resources and technology innovation.

Meituan Dianping 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report
Meituan Dianping 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

In 2019, Meituan further strengthened focus on its mission of “We help people eat better, live better.” Meituan enhanced its commitment to sharing its social responsibility philosophy across its whole ecosystem in order to promote development and progress and to create better lives, a prosperous industry, and a harmonious society.

Highlights of Meituan CSR Report 2019:

  • Services for seniors and children became new territories for service consumption growth. In 2019, the number of delivery orders from the elderly increased by nearly 30% over that of the previous year. Meanwhile, child-friendly hotels and restaurants, as well as education services, also saw a boost. In particular, the number of user reviews of “child-friendly hotels” on Meituan more than doubled in 2019.
  • Meituan provides its 6.2 million merchants with comprehensive support programs to help accelerate their digital transformation. About 49% of China’s “time-honored catering brands” now provide delivery services on Meituan.
  • 3.99 million delivery riders obtained income through Meituan in 2019, an increase of 23.3% year-on-year, and 56.8% of riders were employed in their home provinces.
  • In 2019, among 257,000 delivery riders from state-registered poor households who earned income through Meituan, 98.4% helped their families out of poverty because of the increased income from their employment as delivery riders.

A better life for 450 million users

In 2019, the per capita service expenditure in China accounted for 45.9% of the total consumption. Meituan has made continuous efforts to meet the diversified needs for the quality life of 450 million users on its platforms through technology innovation, service innovation and product innovation.

The Report shows that services for seniors and children became new territories for service consumption growth. Meituan Waimai, the company’s on-demand food delivery business, has helped solve the difficulties in cooking and dining faced by the elderly. In 2019, the number of delivery orders from the elderly, people aged 60 or above, increased by nearly 30% over that of 2018. Meanwhile, for the younger generation, Meituan witnessed a sharp growth in transaction volume for child-friendly restaurants.

Based on deep consumer insights, Meituan provides users with convenient, quality and trustworthy consumption references. Meituan’s 2019 “Black Pearl Restaurant Guide” served as a credible reference for food lovers, while supporting the development of high quality restaurants by driving their number of online orders for set meals up 69% and the total online sales volume up 190% year-on-year.

At the same time, Meituan is committed to promoting a healthy diet and lifestyle. Its platforms witnessed rapid growth in demands for light, low-calorie, diet and healthy meals, sports and fitness activities and consumer medical and healthcare services in 2019.

The beginning of 2020 was marked by the outbreak of COVID-19, stalling a majority of in-store services. Delivery riders served as people’s lifelines while cities were under lockdown and people had to stay at home. Meituan statistics show that Meituan riders in Wuhan, Hubei province, delivered over 4 million orders during the 76-day citywide lockdown period and over 7,000 supermarkets, pharmacies and grocery stores on Meituan in Wuhan delivered groceries and medicines for residents. Meituan was as well the first in the industry to introduce a “contactless delivery” service to protect users and riders from the virus.

Empowering 6.2 million merchants on digitalization

In 2019, the number of active merchants on Meituan reached 6.2 million. Meituan provides diverse merchant support programs in marketing, delivery, IT support, supply chain, operation and financing, to help them lower costs and improve operational efficiency through digital transformation.

The Report shows that 49% of China’s “time-honored catering brands”, which operate about 3,100 restaurants in 246 cities nationwide, provide delivery services on Meituan, while 19.3% offer group purchase and reservation services and 23.5% use QR codes and other digital payment systems. Meituan’s digitalization support is driving a 23% revenue increase in new catering businesses.

Building “new infrastructure” for digital life and a harmonious society

Meituan has been expanding the coverage and practices of social responsibility through programs in employment, poverty alleviation, and public welfare to help address social problems, leveraging its digital capabilities to build a dynamic, sustainable society with partners.

Delivery riders, which were recently added to the official national occupation list by China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, have become a “new infrastructure” for urban life. The Report unveiled that 3.99 million delivery riders obtained income through Meituan in 2019, an increase of 23.3% year-on-year, while 56.8% of delivery riders were employed in their home provinces. Among the 257,000 delivery riders from state-registered poor households who earned income through Meituan last year, 98.4% helped their families out of poverty.

Since late January, after the virus outbreak, Meituan has recruited over 950,000 new riders to join its delivery network.

VeChain and I-Dante Co-developed E-HCert, A Blockchain-based COVID-19 Records App For the Citizens of Cyprus

SHANGHAI, May 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — With the pandemic putting healthcare systems under strain worldwide, Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems are also shifting requirements for data security and sharing. As the leading public blockchain platform, VeChain furthers the collaboration with I-Dante to co-develop E-HCert App, which provides an archival solution for COVID-19 RT-PCR (real time-polymerase chain reaction) and antibodies tests (Rapid Test) records.

The success between VeChain and I-Dante previously on blockchain-enabled medical solution has led to the idea for the E-HCert App, which is now adopted by the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus. The new EHR system provides a secured method of on-chaining the COVID-19 related tests, giving the result of the health status of the individual, and allowing all concerning parties to access said health information at the discretion of the individual. With this set up, the individual can go about life as usual.

Compatible EHRs Should Compare Notes On The Pandemic

In the case of COVID-19, the testing results of citizens can be vital for public welfare and personal rights. Authorities worldwide are calling healthcare institutions to provide secure and legit access to health status information. Citizens themselves would also need trustworthy and reliable proof for their own health condition and full control over their privacy. However, current EHR systems are revealing serious deficiencies in terms of its interoperability, immutability, compliance, and the cost.

There is, therefore, an urgent need for the collection of trustworthy and standardized encrypted medical records that can be safely shared between multi parties.  This is where blockchain technology comes in and becomes the de facto choice for such an implementation.

The Most Feasible Choice For EHR reform: The Public Blockchain

This public blockchain-based E-HCert App provides an archival solution for COVID-19 RT-PCR (real time-polymerase chain reaction) and antibodies tests (Rapid Test) records, which will be utilized to enhance the hospital’s COVID-19 management and response at the end of May 2020.

When a Cyprus citizen goes to the hospital and undergoes RT-PCR and antibodies tests, the testing records will be uploaded onto the VeChainThor Blockchain, and the immutably recorded results are then shown in the E-HCert Native App.  As E-HCert fully complies with the GDPR, the App enables the owner to have complete control over their profiles, and use it to prove his or her health status when trying to return to work, take a flight abroad, and get authorized for other activities.

Enabling The Next Wave Of Digital Health Reform

COVID-19 has prompted an expansion of industrial power in healthcare. A recent report found that 33 of the 50 US-based hospitals examined were working with Amazon, Google, or Microsoft. The Wall Street Journal said the internet giants are also wrestling for control in health-care  markets.

Compared with traditional technologies, blockchain provides better opportunities for companies to review their healthcare data systems, optimize the workflow design, while simultaneously enabling every patient to safely hold their records and share it immediately with any party in the world.

As the world’s leading public blockchain platform, VeChain intends to use its experience in the blockchain industry to empower more partners in the healthcare sector. By doing so, VeChain will play a central role in the acceleration of the digitalization of the healthcare industry.

Uniper Lauded by Frost & Sullivan for Optimally Extracting Actionable Insights from Available Data with Its IIoT-based Platform, Enerlytics

The platform helps ensure uninterrupted plant operations by offering plant owners a holistic, real-time view of asset performance

LONDON, May 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Based on its recent analysis of the global industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform for the power generation sector, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Germany-based Uniper SE (Uniper) with the 2020 Global Product Leadership Award. Uniper’s IIoT platform, Enerlytics, delivers a comprehensive, real-time view of asset performance by capturing data from multiple sources and performing streaming and batch analytics. These actions are made possible through its five core clusters of asset maintenance and reliability management, asset performance management, asset risk management, asset market optimization, and asset planning, and valuation. It further builds value into its solution with the plant performance tracker (PPT) and a thermodynamic modeling suite (TMS).

“Enerlytics’ five clusters enable better access to data, data manipulation, and data sharing with a broader audience in an ecosystem. The company then leverages its engineering expertise to extract actionable insights from this data,” said Vasanth Krishnan, Senior Analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “Uniper’s advanced multi-dimensional anomaly detection algorithm can model the entire power station, not just the main shaft line. Operators train models on “good” data and create alert limits around them. When an alert occurs, Uniper reviews it and sends it to the site with a full diagnosis and suggested course of action. This process, utilized within the Predictive Maintenance Hub (PMH) application, enables Uniper to break down a complex system into its constituent components to model and monitor.”

Meanwhile, a customer’s whole plant and subsystems can use Uniper’s TMS both online and offline for what-if and root cause analyses. These models offer insights for expected performance based on design data, actual performance based on live data, target performance based on design data incorporated known degradation, and the delta between the above levels. Uniper’s TMS ultimately helps operators understand plant performance in relation to design, and then identifies the root cause of any issues with the support of Uniper’s experts.

Furthermore, the company delivers best-in-class value through its comprehensive testing. All of its solutions are tested on its own assets first before client implementations, allowing it to present proven benefits and rapid return on investment. Uniper builds on its price-to-performance value through its PPT application, which empowers users to interpret the output from the TMS and other applications. It also allows users to carry out non-step checks and comparisons of plant start-ups and shutdowns, analyzing the data to locate discrepancies, and flag abnormalities before they become critical issues.

“Current market offerings in the IIoT for the power generation sector mostly focus on predictive maintenance and performance management, and fail to address challenges in risk management, maintenance strategy, and market solutions,” noted Krishnan. “As an integrated company with a comprehensive knowledge and experience base, Uniper strategically includes risk management and trading within its platform. This solid value proposition, best-in-class features, and close relationships with customers will ensure the continued adoption of its platform in the future.”

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that develops a product with innovative features and functionality that is gaining rapid market acceptance. The award recognizes the quality of the solution and the customer value enhancements it enables.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.

As short suspense dramas, most notably led by Detective Chinatown, have embraced a new wave of enthusiasm entering 2020, iQIYI gained valuable insights into users’ growing demand for high-quality short suspense dramas. Through the Theater, the Company will stream dozens of short suspense dramas, serving as a platform of choice for fans of the genre.

iQIYI, the first video platform in China to kickstart brand operations for online drama series, launched China’s first online drama theater — Youth Theater at the iQIYI World Conference in May 2018. This helped create a dedicated community for young viewers with diversified content as well as a variety of groundbreaking interactive features. The online drama theater oversaw the release of dramas including With You, My Huckleberry Friends and Legend of Yun Xi on iQIYI’s Youth Theater, which not only catered to the different needs of viewers, but also set an example for the entertainment industry for the operations of refined online dramas, thus consolidating iQIYI’s position as the platform for “the best teen dramas”.

In the same year, iQIYI released Mystery & Suspense Theater and Hero Theater for various other genres of dramas, providing an extensive range of quality content for better viewing experiences and making it the go-to streaming platform for teens.

Through creating dedicated drama libraries, iQIYI continuously meets fans’ evolving and specific needs, making it the go-to platform for enthusiasts to find their favorite genre. Once the Theater is launched, iQIYI will periodically upgrade it to ensure suspense drama fans can continuously enjoy new thrilling, high-quality content by improving the platform’s theater mode.

HONOR Launches the HONOR Life – a Collection of Smart Home Items Including a TV

We got a very brief tease of HONOR’s very interesting TV toward the end of last year. We saw them at one of their launches. Sadly, the staff at the time said that the TV will not be coming to Malaysia.

HONOR Vision X1

This year, they introduced a new TV alongside a whole slew of smart products for your home. They introduced their new HONOR Vision X1 TV. Seeing that we did not have HONOR’s previous TV, we do not know much about it. The new HONOR Vision X1 TV though packs 8K resolution from either a 65-inch or 55-inch. We still do not know whether this will come to Malaysia or not. We are hopeful though.

It packs four 10W speakers to output super powerful and clear audio so that you do not need to spend on new soundbars or sound system. The HONOR Vision X1 also packs Motion Estimate and Motion Compensation technology to prevent blurring when upscaling happens. The Honghu 818 System on a Chip (SoC) within the TV also helps reduce display flickering. At 65-inch it sets you back RMB 3,299 (MYR 2,019) while the 55-inch HONOR Vision X1 will set you back RMB 2,299 (MYR 1,407). That is extremely cheap for an 8K TV to be fair. Let us hope that it makes it into Malaysia before the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 5.

HONOR Router 3

Exactly what it sounds like, they launched a WiFi Router. This is not just a regular router with 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands though. It is a WiFi 6+ capable router with 1.2GHz antenna. This also means that the HONOR Router 3 is one of the most advanced routers available in the market at its launch later in July 2020. Again, we do not know if that is coming into Malaysia. Still, you might be able to get them on TaoBao later.

WiFi 6 means more speed and stability. Still, once it meets a wall or two, stability drops. WiFi 6+, according to HONOR anyway, is supposed to solve that issue. With WiFi 6+ signals through the wall should still be stable enough to be useable. Whatever that is, sign me up. It is priced at RMB 219 (MYR 134).

HONOR Choice Home Appliances

They not only launched a new TV and Router for the Smart Home. They also launched a selection of home appliances. They launched an electronic toothbrush that is designed to ensure that there is no dirt build up on the device. They call it their Smart Ultra-sonic Toothbrush. I am not a big fan of electronic Toothbrush though. No prices for this yet.

Source: HONOR

They also launched a Smart Kettle, a Smart Lamp, and a Smart Humidifier. These are items that you may be able to find in the shops though. There is no mention if these smart products are compatible with WiFi connectivity for remote control or not. We do hope that is the case with these products though. They also launched a bladeless fan they call Air Multiplier. No, it is not going to add more air into the room. Like any other fan, it just helps circulate air within a room. That might be useful in the hot and humid weather that is Malaysia though.

They launched a very interesting Smart Vacuum that mimics the more popular handheld, wireless vacuum today. In the launch gambit, they took a stab at Dyson. We know the Dyson wireless vacuum is the best there is in the market. They are claiming that the HONOR Smart Vacuum is more powerful than the Dysons. It packs a 350W 100,000rpm motor with 65 minutes of battery life. Its battery life is more than enough for most homes in Malaysia. It even has ultraviolet-sterilisation cleansing system to keep your floors cleaner than it can ever be. Whether that lives up to HONOR’s hype is yet to be seen though. We do not even know when all these products comes to Malaysia, if they ever come at all.

TWS Earbuds X1

Of course, with the craze with wireless things and wireless earphones, HONOR will not miss out. They launched the HONOR TWS Earbuds X1, their very own, very new True Wireless earphones for the masses.

Its design is very familiar. That is also because it is reminiscent of Apple’s AirPod Pro. It looks like it has a shorter stem though, which also means it is smaller in profile. There is no active noise cancelling on the earbuds though. Still, you get up to 24-hours in battery life with the TWS Earbuds X1 package. We do not know how much of that is down to the case’s battery power.

The TWS Earbuds X1 is priced at RMB 169 (MYR 103). It does not seem like there are any other colour choices except for white. Still, it is affordable. There is no confirmed availability date just yet. We do expect this one to come to Malaysia though.

New Dell Latitude Devices Bank on Portability, Flexibility and Power

Dell’s Latitude line up has been on that has had its focus on empowering a mobile work force. That focus remains ever present in their newly refreshed line up. With the current global situation, Dell’s innovations have been pushed to the forefront; some of which enable a remote workforce, empowered by technological advancements that make sense for productivity.

One of the innovations that has taken centerstage for Dell is Dell’s Unified Workspace on the Latitude. The approach to having a single, unified workspace whether working remotely or in the office allows higher productivity and less downtime. In fact, users are able to access documents, files and more remotely with their Dell Latitude setups. Setup and maintenance of Dell’s Latitude is a non issue for IT departments as they are able to image new setups remotely and have peace of mind as they are able to automate and utilise AI technology to keep everything up and running.

2020 Latitudes Have the Same DNA with More Power and Personality

This year’s Latitude line up keeps the same ethos but brings along with it a whole slew of new technological advances that allow it be more versatile and enable different workflows. The new Latitude mobile workstations come with a slimmer build, the same strength and pack more of a punch. The members of the refreshed line up come with nearly bezel-less, high resolution displays, slimmer silhouettes and some even come with multimode functionality.

This year, Dell’s Latitude line up is spearheaded by the Dell Latitude 9000 series. A new, ultra premium line up which comes with more functionality for increased productivity and versatility. The new Latitude 9510 and 9410 are the built to enable a mobile workforce with multimode versatility. The new laptops come with built-in AI that learns the usage and work patterns of the user and adapts intelligently to extend battery life and even keep sensitive documents private. The AI is able to reduce the hassle of signing in with ExpressSign-in while locking the PC as soon as the user leaves the desk. Both also support stylus input with Dell’s active pen.

The Latitude 7000 series has been redesigned for a more mobile and versatile workforce. The heroes of this redesign is the detachable 2-in-1 7210, and the multimode 7310 and 7410.
