Getting Indonesia Data Center Ready for SEA Booming Digital Economy

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Dec. 15, 2020Southeast Asia (SEA) has set the seal on the top spot globally as the mobile economy hotspot, overtaken China as a giant economy country. According to the study, there are more than 400 million internet users in the SEA region which accounts for around 10% of the world’s total internet users. Indonesia has reached 175,4 million, with penetration at 64% of the total Indonesian population of 272,1 million.

Most of the growth is set down to Indonesia which has the largest population in the SEA region wherein (Indonesia) the number of internet users has witnessed growth of 20% over the past two years, equating to an estimate of 29 million new users. It is expected that Indonesia will be one of the major three fastest-growing e-commerce countries globally which include India, and Malaysia.

This does not come as a surprise, and the archipelago’s digital economy is expected to be the largest in Southeast Asia. According to the annual e-Conomy Southeast Asia study by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company, its market value is expected to triple to US$309 billion by 2025, driven by the rise of e-commerce, ride-hailing and online gaming.

To realize this billion-dollar potential, Indonesia needs to overcome the lack of robust digital infrastructure that hurdle both the public and private sectors. In order to reap the full benefits of digital transformation, investing in ICT is key, especially data center and network capabilities as these are backbones to successful implementation of innovative technologies.

Ensuring Indonesia data center scalability for booming digital economy

The Indonesian data centre colocation market is concentrated in the Greater Jakarta region in West Java. The Jakarta data centre market is set to enter an accelerated growth phase. The market is expected to have 72.5MW of total inventory built out by the end of 2020 and this will grow at a five-year CAGR of 22.3% according to Structure Research projections.

Currently, Indonesia’s colocation data centre market is at a beginning stage. It is relatively challenging for overseas data centre colocation operators looking to enter or expand, due the lack of rich fibre infrastructure outside the Golden Triangle and vibrant domestic outsourcing market.

Now the question is, how optimized are data center operators in Indonesia alone to cater the booming digital economy?

In-house or multi-tenant data center operators need to brace themselves for the surging volume of data and the growing expectations of a seamless digital experience. DCI Indonesia, Telkomsigma, Biznet and others are prominent players in the Indonesian market.

"There are tremendous opportunities ahead, the cloud is growing exponentially along with the booming digital economy, and they need to provide [the] infrastructure to cater for the cloud. The advantages are undoubtedly driving demand and fueling recent growth of new hyperscale facilities in Indonesia. Currently, this market has DCI Indonesia to fulfill the demand for hyperscalers to enter the market," said Philbert Shih, Managing Director of Structure Research.

DCI Indonesia, has built a 200MW facility at 85,000 sq m land in Cibitung at Greater Jakarta last year, the first largest hyperscale campus in Indonesia, to meet future capacity needs seamlessly.

"As an Indonesian company, DCI Indonesia is the pioneer of the largest single site hyperscale data center facility in Indonesia with current capacity 22 MW, total up to 200 MW growth. Our long-term vision is to provide the best in class data center, to reinforce our commitment and seriousness in supporting the development of Indonesia’s digital economy towards the coming of the Industrial Revolution 4.0," DCI CEO Toto Sugiri said.

Hyperscale cloud is the primary driver of growth in this market, creating steady demand for wholesale data centre capacity.

The Jakarta data centre colocation market is set to take off as Internet adoption accelerates in the mass market and enterprises begin to use various infrastructure outsourcing models. Much of this activity is moving to hyperscale cloud platforms and the data centre market is positioned to take full advantage.

Hyperscale will create demand for wholesale colocation to house the supporting infrastructure and drive uptake of interconnection services to integrate and scale with cloud services. For the total Jakarta market, built out capacity in 2025 is projected to reach 198.5MW, with maximum build out capacity of 236.3MW.

It may take a while longer for the emerging SEA countries, like Indonesia, to mature. But, Indonesia is set to be the fastest growing market for data centres in SEA, with a growth rate of 22 per cent per annum over the next five years.

The wholesale data centre colocation portion of the market is expected to grow at a five-year CAGR of 43.5% between 2020-25. The wholesale data centre colocation market alone will reach approximately 131.2 MW of built out capacity in 2025.

This research and trends shows Indonesia as a "hotspot" for hyperscale data center investment within the next five years, driven by the rise in cloud adoption.  Google’s, Alibaba, and AWS entry into Indonesia also demonstrates a developing interest in the country as a substitute to Singapore.

Toto Sugiri, CEO of DCI Indonesia, added, "As of today, we continue to witness strong market demand from our current customers as well as global business players looking to enter the market. To keep up with demand, DCI Indonesia has completed the final stages of construction for our newest data center building, JK5, with the capacity of 15 MW, an additional 20% (approximately) from current capacity built out in Indonesia. This gave us a strong foundation to grow our business in supporting the readiness of Indonesia data center for this SEA booming digital economy in the next future".

Just Say YES, You Really Have to with YES’ Kasi Up Mobile Data Plans

How much do you pay for data? That is the question that you often do not ask yourself in this difficult period. It is also something we take for granted these days. In fact, we have taken this for granted for a while. You never really thought about it also because Malaysia’s major Telco players have not made a huge step in terms of competitive pricing over data. That is, until now.

To be fair, when you talk about a major Telco for Malaysia, you would not start at YES 4G. You might not even consider this plucky organisation to be a major Telco in Malaysia. To blow your bubble a little bit, we can safely say that they are now a major Telco in Malaysia. They have one of the widest, if not the widest 4G network coverage in Malaysia. This includes Sabah and Sarawak, mind you.

Back to the price of data. If you do a little bit of research in and around the region of South East Asia, Malaysia’s data price point is not exactly the most affordable. You have players in Indonesia, and even Singapore that would offer data at much cheaper price points. Malaysia still has competitive pricing on data though, do not get us wrong.

It could be even more affordable though, and YES, with the Kasi Up plans, show that it is completely possible. They have introduced two new mobile data plans with Kasi Up, one Prepaid and one Postpaid. Both are, in our books, extremely attractive in value.

Kasi Up Prepaid

Source: YES

We start with the prepaid Kasi Up plan. The YES Kasi Up Prepaid 15 plan, they call it. As the numbers suggest, it will cost you MYR 15 for a 30-day validity. To be fair, that does not actually sound all that special. MYR 15 though buys you 10GB of data for that 30 days of validity though. This pricing is quite unheard of in Malaysia. Before this, YES’ most affordable data plan was MYR 30 for up to 10GB of data. Of course, for prepaid plans, calls are charged normally (MYR 0.09/call) on your valid airtime.

Kasi Up Postpaid

Source: YES

If you want to make calls for free though, you go for a YES Kasi Up Postpaid 49 plan. As the name suggests also, the plan will cost you MYR 49 a month. For just below MYR 50, you get 100GB of 4G data a month and free unlimited call time. This also means that your data effectively costs less than MYR 0.50 for every 1GB. What’s more, you get to have your bill free for the first 6 months if you sign up for a 24-month plan. This is also effectively the cheapest data plan available in Malaysia currently.

Additional Plans

Of course, the YES Kasi Up mobile plans are not limited to just those two plans. For prepaid customers, you can choose between three available plans. You know the YES Kasi Up Prepaid 15 data plan. There is a YES Kasi Up Prepaid 20 plan too for MYR 20 a month. You get 20GB of data a month for MYR 20. Then you can go for YES Kasi Up Prepaid Unlimited for MYR 30 month which qualifies you for unlimited mobile data capped at 7mbps and 9GB of uncapped speed hotspot data. This also makes the YES Prepaid Unlimited data plan the most affordable of its kind in Malaysia.

For Postpaid customers, the YES Kasi Up Postpaid 49 data plan is the most premium available from YES. You can go for something cheaper at MYR 30 for the YES Kasi Up Postpaid 30. You only get a data quota of 20GB a month though, on top of a free YES 4G smartphone.

Kasi Up Refer & Earn

Source: YES

YES also introduced a new way of earning a little bit of side income for Malaysians with YES Kasi Up Refer & Earn programme. You get up to MYR 50 cash for every referral you make when you get your friends to sign up for the YES Kasi Up data plan. Your friend also makes MYR 50, if they sign up. It really looks like a win-win situation.

Availability

There is some caveat in all this though. YES relies completely on their own 4G network with no 3G or 2G coverage. That also means that if you do lose your 4G coverage, you lose coverage. YES has continuously worked to improve network coverage in all major cities in Malaysia and even rural areas in Malaysia, enabling connectivity across the nation though. The introduction of the Kasi Up data plans will also bring an end to all their previous data plans. Current users would be transitioned to their new Kasi Up plan. Why would you not want to be transitioned to a cheaper plan?

The YES Kasi Up data plan is now available for both new and current customers. You can head to your nearest YES outlet to get more information, obtain your SIM card, and sign up for either the postpaid or prepaid plans. You can also head to their website for more information and to obtain their SIM cards and get it delivered to your doorstep for free. Of course, all terms and conditions apply.

CNN’s ‘Going Green’ meets the game-changers who reveal the light bulb moments that led to a green revolution

HONG KONG, Dec. 15, 2020 — Across the globe, people are working tirelessly on innovations to solve some of the biggest environmental challenges we face. This month, in a 30-minute special, CNN’s ‘Going Green’ meets the experts leading a green revolution in everything from organic farming to species conservation.

CNN’s ‘Going Green’ meets the game-changers who reveal the light bulb moments that led to a green revolution

When Wesley Oxenham returned to his home country of Mauritius, he knew he wanted to give back to the community. He created ‘Farm City’, empowering locals to grow their own organic food and teaching children about ecology, environment and farming. The small social enterprise has proven so successful he is now expanding the idea, setting up a second farm in Singapore.

Pangolins are among the most heavily poached animals on earth, facing a threat so large they could be pushed to the brink of extinction soon. CNN learns about the ongoing efforts to rescue and rehabilitate abused and trafficked pangolins in South Africa, and hears from Ray Jansen, chairman of the African Pangolin Working Group, about the need for a collective humanitarian effort to save them.

David Milarch is on a mission to save the largest organisms the world has ever known: redwood trees. They can grow to over 115 meters tall and can live for over two millennia – but persistent logging and the mounting effects of climate change have now put the future survival of these trees in jeopardy. Milarch and his army of volunteers around the world are working to clone and propagate new redwoods in the hopes of saving them for many generations to come.

South Africa has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but it is also ranked as one of the planet’s worst plastic marine polluters – creating an environmental crisis on its shoreline. CNN meets conservationist Aaniyah Omardien, who founded a volunteer-based beach co-op to clean popular beaches. She has teamed up with Peter Ryan, an ornithologist and leading researcher on marine plastic waste, to investigate the origins of the plastic pollution they find.

Beyond Hong Kong’s world-famous skyline lies miles of lush tropical forests and mountain jungles – but this wasn’t always the case. Around 40 years ago the city launched an aggressive reforestation program to prevent erosion and beautify the city’s mountain landscapes. CNN meets one of the local pioneers of conservation, Gunter Fischer, who continues to lead the charge to green Hong Kong through an ecological restoration project.

Industry 4.0 implementation is the only way for the printing industry. A large part of it is the use of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and big data in merging the virtual and the physical worlds. After integrating intelligent components in print workflow, most procedures will be automated. ProStream 1000 series can complete end-to-end workflow independently with plan-ahead production. This will eliminate a large volume of manual processing and allow human resources to be shifted to more valuable tasks. Staff can monitor progress of each print job and the completion time of each procedure through the system dashboard to increase transparency. Mr. Shunichi Morinaga, President and CEO of Canon Hongkong Co., Ltd. and Chairman of Canon Business Solutions (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., said, "ProStream 1000 series adopted a variety of automation elements. With the endeavors of Canon HK and our solely owned subsidiary in this collaboration, C&C must be able to unleash the potential of the series to further develop in the printing market in Greater Bay Area and across China. Furthermore, we are sure that the maturity of digital printing and the series can assist C&C to further transit to Industry 4.0, empowering them to a greater extent in the midst of digital transformation."

To fulfill the needs of the rapidly changing market conditions, C&C has been striving to transform digitally through the "connect and smart" concept. The ultimate goal is to enhance customer experience with a digital operating model. As inkjet technology has become more mature and well established, our flagship product — ProStream 1000 series delivers high speed and outstanding productivity. Its monthly duty cycle is up to 35 million A4 impressions. It also produces lines and text that are sharp and crisp on both coated and uncoated papers. Together with the native 1,200 dpi level, the print quality is comparable to offset printers and is able to meet the requirements of high-end customers on photo album and artwork printing. Furthermore, it offers print-on-demand (POD) service that allows flexible print amount based on actual needs. This will help businesses to reduce the cost of inventory and free up the space on storage. Personalization is another benefit of POD technology, which elevates product uniqueness and business competitiveness by customizing designs for different target segments. Hence, companies can expand to new markets and create new business opportunities for sustainable growth.

Canon HK and C&C both attach great importance to innovation and adopt a similar business philosophy. Not merely are they adhere to continual improvement on aspects including product R&D, service quality, and marketing, but also optimize customer experience through innovation whilst maintain performance superiority. "Canon HK believes that the cooperation will lead to unlimited possibilities and contribution to the printing industry and development of business in the Greater Bay Area in the coming future," Mr. Shunichi Morinaga said.

It’s Not Just You… Google Services are down! [Update: Issue Seems to be Resolved]

Update 8:46pm: Google services seem to be coming back online. Sites like YouTube and Gmail are back. Google Play is still down, however. Discord is also back – it seems like the outage was unrelated.

Update 9:03pm: Pokemon GO is back online. No comment yet from Google. However, they have noted on their dashboard that, “service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”

Update 9:08pm: The Google Play Store is back online. It seems like the issue has been resolved.

If you’ve been trying to get into Gmail and other Google services like YouTube and failing, you’re not alone; while pretty rare, it seems like Google is experiencing a worldwide disruption of nearly all their services. Outages have been reported since 7:23 pm Malaysian time.

The disruption seems pretty extensive this time with services like GSuite for Business and Education also being affected in addition to Google’s new game streaming service, Stadia. YouTube is also down. If you’re on Android, the Google Play Store is also facing the same predicament. It seems like the outage is affecting more than just Google’s in-house apps. Apps like Pokemon GO and Discord have also been affected by the outage.

Reports are coming in are indicating that the outage may be more extensive with countries such as South Africa, the United Kingdom, India, the United States, Egypt, New Zealand, Romania, Russia and Thailand and Turkey also reporting the same.

The issue seems to be with account authentication as users are reporting that sites such as YouTube are accessible when accessed via an incognito window. YouTube Music is apparently still accessible on browsers at the time of writing. However, if you try to access the service through its app, you will only be able to access your downloaded content.

We will be updating this article as the situation develops.
