TUV Rheinland: Cyber risks for industrial plants underestimated

TUV Rheinland and Ponemon Institute publish worldwide study on the Cybersecurity of industrial plants. All information at https://go.tuv.com/otsurvey-2020

COLOGNE, July 2, 2020 — Cyberattacks can threaten the industrial facilities of companies even more than their IT systems. However, a holistic view of the security of industrial plants is often lacking. This is a key finding of a recent study on security in industrial companies by TUV Rheinland and the Ponemon Institute.

Operational Technology in the sights of the hackers

Operational Technology (OT) is the main target for cyberattacks on industrial plants. These are devices and systems that control or monitor industrial processes – such as motors, pumps or valves. "OT systems differ in function and technology from classic corporate IT. At the same time, successful cyberattacks on OT systems often cause particularly high levels of damage to the companies affected", explains Petr Láhner, Executive Vice President of the Business Stream Industrial Service & Cybersecurity at TUV Rheinland. "We have therefore placed the Cybersecurity of Operational Technology at the center of our study, following on from the findings of the first study on this subject in 2019".

Measures for IT and OT systems not coordinated

For the "2020 Study on the State of Industrial Security", the independent market research company Ponemon Institute surveyed more than 2,200 cybersecurity experts worldwide from the automotive, health and pharmaceutical, logistics and transport, mechanical engineering, oil and gas and utility sectors. The Ponemon Institute, based in Traverse City, Michigan, is dedicated to independent research on information and privacy management in companies.

The following results show how much cyberattacks endanger OT systems:

  • More than half of the respondents (57 percent) say that their companies firmly expect attacks on OT systems.
  • Almost half (48 percent) are convinced that cyber threats pose a greater risk to OT systems than to the IT environment.
  • Almost two thirds (63 percent) of those surveyed stated that security measures for IT and OT systems are not coordinated in their companies.
  • For almost half of the respondents (47 percent), cyber threats to OT systems have increased over the past year. These include attacks such as phishing, social engineering and extortion software ("ransomware").

"From our point of view, it is crucial that companies tailor their cybersecurity measures to the specific requirements in Operational Technology. For example, some control systems may have limited cybersecurity controls in place and could subsequently be vulnerable to cyber threats. To do this, companies have to assess their OT cyber risk and invest time and money for best effect. It is alarming that in the view of the experts surveyed, there are too few financial or professional resources available for OT security. In addition, a holistic view of the security of industrial plants is often still lacking. In an increasingly networked world, industrial plants are only really secure if both their IT and OT cybersecurity is addressed", Láhner says.

Körber Unveils Next-Generation Sorter for Supply Chain Automation

Körber Crossbelt Sorter enhances depth and breadth of supply chain solutions with complete materials handling portfolio

HAMBURG, Germany, July 2, 2020 — Körber, the global supply chain technology leader from software to materials handling automation, today unveils the Körber Crossbelt Sorter. The latest addition to Kӧrber’s portfolio empowers businesses to create truly unified automation solutions to excel in today’s increasingly complex supply chain landscape.

Supply chains must handle more products, more suppliers and fulfill through various channels. Consumer expectations for choice, convenience and speed add to this complexity. To maintain a competitive edge, businesses need automation technologies to handle the evolving challenges of ecommerce and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG). However, many businesses lack a solid strategy and struggle with implementation, integration, and costs. Kӧrber overcomes all of this.

"Kӧrber has the goal of strategically aligning our supply chain technologies and expertise to the needs of our customers and the industry," says Stephan Gӧttsche, chief executive officer at Körber Supply Chain – Automation. "The Körber Crossbelt Sorter exemplifies this. One in three companies still manages supply chain processes manually. This is one of many initiatives we are taking to expand our portfolio and capitalize on our 30+ years of expertise in system integration to design automation systems for today and tomorrow’s demands."

The Crossbelt Sorter seamlessly integrates with any materials handling equipment (MHE) to create unified automation systems. Be it conveyors, shuttles, or beyond, the Crossbelt Sorter uniquely links the MHE of different functional areas – receiving, storage, multi-stage picking, or dispatch. Hence, the Crossbelt Sorter dynamically distributes goods based on any criteria to the proper destination at any stage in the process. Furthermore, the sorter’s modular design enables quick and simple integration with the existing system landscape. The result is a higher level of automation, enabling shorter reaction times, increased efficiency and higher throughput. Examples of success include transport of up to 14,000 containers per hour, carrier changeovers in only 10 minutes, and conveying speeds of 1.8 m/s.

"Conquering today’s supply chain complexities requires higher levels of automation," said Pieter Feenstra, chief sales officer for Kӧrber Supply Chain –  Automation. "Intelligently linking different material handling components is necessary to excel in today’s market. Körber offers the consulting, the solutions, the software and systems integration to make it a reality for businesses of any size."

The Körber Business Area Supply Chain is part of the international technology group Körber. Compuware Mainframe DevOps Integrations Further Automate Shift-left Testing

Integrated Test Data Management and Automated Testing Ensures Test Data Consistency, Accuracy and Security

DETROIT, July 1, 2020 — Compuware Corporation, a BMC company and the leading provider of software for mainframe DevOps, today announced new capabilities that further automate and integrate test data and test case execution, empowering IT teams to achieve high-performance application development quality, velocity and efficiency.

The new integration tightly couples the Topaz for Enterprise Data solution with the Topaz for Total Test solution enabling test data setup to be directly embedded into automated testing. By further automating shift-left testing in the Autonomous Digital Enterprise, teams can ensure test data consistency, accuracy and security.

Business demand for faster innovation is putting pressure on IT organizations. According to a recent survey1, 85 percent of organizations find it difficult to deliver innovation faster without compromising quality, security, customer experience and operational efficiency. Test automation is cited as the single most important factor in overcoming these risks.

“The collective efforts to build quality into software as early as possible is one of the biggest and most important changes I see in the industry,” said Gary Gruver, digital transformation author and consultant. “It is also frequently one of the most difficult due to all the challenges with coordinating and automating code changes, test case changes and test data. It’s good to see Compuware addressing this need.”

The lack of test automation and easy access to good test data is holding organizations back from necessarily improving mainframe software quality, velocity and efficiency. The Topaz for Total Test and Topaz for Enterprise Data integration empowers teams to:

Improve test consistency. Continuous automated testing requires consistent test data. Improper test data can lead to inconsistent or incorrect test results, wasted time troubleshooting errors, or worse, the introduction of bugs. With the new integration, teams can ensure test consistency is maintained by calling the data load process as part of the test case and automatically loading a subset of data into a test environment. In the event the test fails, developers and testers can confidently tie the problem to the code and not the data.

Remove friction and empower developers. Developers often rely on a specialized team or database administrator to build and load data into a test environment—a practice rife with manual processes, wait times and handoffs that put an unnecessary drag on velocity and efficiency. Now, developers themselves can setup and access the right test data when they need it.

Ensure adoption through continuous testing. A repeatable data extract and load process can be part of an automated testing toolchain, driving data consistency and reducing complexity. And, as an aid to nudging developers’ transition away from manual methods, automation can be set up incrementally to properly manage the scale and pace of adoption.

Protect sensitive data. With this integrated process, once the test data is loaded, it can also be privatized to protect personally identifiable information (PII). Automating the privatization as part of the continuous test reduces the risk of a security breach.

“We are dedicated to providing our customers with superior digital products and services,” said Lynn Farley, VP, Manager, Digital Banking and Test Data Privacy at TCF Bank. “Compuware Topaz is helping us do that by disguising sensitive data and populating the environments to improve our testing processes while still being compliant. We can deliver quickly without compromising quality, efficiency or security.”

“High-performance organizations in the Age of Software are maniacally focused on removing software delivery bottlenecks that waste precious development time, money and energy,” said Chris O’Malley, CEO of Compuware. “Driving intrinsic automation throughout a mainframe-inclusive DevOps pipeline frees up these development resources so teams can focus 100 percent on quickly—and continuously—turning ideas that matter to their always wonderfully, beautifully dissatisfied customers into deliverables that make a difference. This is no longer an IT aspiration. It’s an absolute business imperative to effectively compete for both your current and potential customers.”

Step Aside Pokémon Go! Niantic Announces Catan: World Explorers!

After the success of Pokémon GO, it comes as no surprise that there are more augmented reality (AR) games being developed by Niantic. However, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Catan was the last game on your mind to get an AR edition. In collaboration with Asmodee, Niantic is bringing the popular board game to life on your mobile phone!

CATAN: World Explorers turns the whole world into a gigantic playable game of CATAN. As you might expect, if you’ve played the popular board game, you will be collecting resources: bricks, lumber, grain, ore and wool to trade with other players and building settlements into cities. You’ll also be playing in teams to collect Victory Points at local and global levels – similar to the team mechanic in Pokémon Go.

As you might expect from a Niantic game, CATAN: New Explorers uses the same maps from Pokémon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite to create interactive landmarks which become central to the gameplay. These real world locations are then pieced into a humungous, global map and playing board for an AR game of CATAN.

The new CATAN AR game is one of ten projects currently being developed at Niantic. The company has teased the projects in a new announcement blog post on website.

CATAN: New Explores is ready for its beta debut and has opened pre-registrations at its official website.
