Self-Driving Vehicle Comes to South East Asia Courtesy of HUAWEI

With all the attention that HUAWEI is getting these past few weeks for all the wrong reasons, they are still positive. They are still Malaysia’s biggest hope to our progression toward 5G, they have collaborated with Singapore to bring more contents to their own platform, and they are still innovating on their smartphones. Also, they are still the largest network infrastructure provider in this part of the world.

Driverless cars, on the other hand, is not something that is quite prevalent here. In South East Asia at least, the most we can get is assisted braking. Even radar guided cruise control over here is not something that is readily available. To hear about a driverless car in this neck of the woods is news.

Sadly, we are not getting that technology in Malaysia. The system is placed in Thailand first. It is not a Tesla either. It is completely autonomous with no human input controls within the vehicle at least.

It is not made for commercial purposes either, so you cannot even buy it even if you have millions in the bank. Maybe you can, but that is not the point. The new autonomous vehicle is Thailand’s next step in transforming the nation into a digital one.

Technically the vehicle in question looks nothing more than a metal box on four wheels. That is because, that is all it is – a delivery vehicle to revolutionise the Thailand healthcare industry. No, it is not made to transport human beings as ambulances.

Source: HUAWEI

They are mostly made to transport medical equipment, or medical supplies either within a hospital compound or from one hospital in town to the other. Which also means that this will also be on the road. There is a problem to all these autonomous vehicles however – how are they driven?

Usually an autonomous vehicle gathers data through various cameras and sensors placed around its body panels. These data are stitched through its ‘brains’ or CPU and uploaded to the cloud for further analysis to create detailed information of the road it sees, and the objects around it. The computer within the vehicle will determine how fast it should be going, where it should be heading, and where to place itself to avoid collisions, and find the fastest route to its destination. This also means a more reliable delivery service. Important when it comes to life and death.

There is a crucial component in autonomous vehicle networks though – data. You cannot just collect endless amounts of data and not offload it and back it up somewhere else. You need to share the data, back it up, and retrieve older data for the machine to understand situations better and make decisions based on every other data. For that, you need a stable and fast internet connection. For that you can look at 5G.

In this case, HUAWEI is that big partner that brings on the 5G capabilities required for Thailand’s revolutionary delivery vehicle service for the medical field. Technically that is it, HUAWEI empowering the healthcare segment of Thailand through their 5G. There is a little more than that though.

By effectively transforming the healthcare environment with 5G infrastructures also propels Thailand at the forefront of 5G readiness. While Malaysia is aiming to get 5G to hit the streets as soon as the end of 2020, it seems that Thailand has leaped forward and start taking advantage of 5G in improving their healthcare capacity and capabilities. This is a start to a much bigger 5G future.

What do you think of Malaysia’s progress toward 5G? Which industry do you think should get 5G capabilities first? Let us know in the comments!

Chemist Warehouse teams up with Cohesio Group (Körber) for same-day delivery solution

MELBOURNE, Australia, July 15, 2020 — In response to the changing demands of consumers and a record peak in online orders during COVID-19, Australia’s largest pharmacy retailer, Chemist Warehouse, has teamed up with Cohesio Group (Körber) to launch a same-day delivery service for its 1.5 million weekly customers.

From L - R: Rizan Mawzoon, Head of Transportation at Cohesio Group, Mark Finocchiaro, Managing Partner and Director at Chemist Warehouse, Edwin Chong, Project Manager and Tim Noakes, Development Lead at Cohesio Group
From L – R: Rizan Mawzoon, Head of Transportation at Cohesio Group, Mark Finocchiaro, Managing Partner and Director at Chemist Warehouse, Edwin Chong, Project Manager and Tim Noakes, Development Lead at Cohesio Group

Established in 2002, Chemist Warehouse has grown to become Australia’s largest pharmacy retailer. Operating more than 500 stores across the nation, the leading retailer now services more than 1.5 million customers and dispenses almost a million prescriptions per week.

Since COVID-19, Chemist Warehouse has experienced a huge increase in online orders, reaching higher levels than previous Black Friday and Christmas peaks.

As a result, the retailer has launched Click and Deliver, a new same-day delivery service from Chemist Warehouse and Cohesio Group to offer customers flexible and convenient delivery options. The new solution will complement the retailer’s previous sophisticated Click and Collect offering.

“We wanted to ensure that we could offer our customers the safest possible option to shop during COVID-19 restrictions. We knew that for many they felt it was a risk to leave their homes and shop in the traditional way, so we approached Cohesio Group to help us develop our existing Click and Collect solution to become a Click and Deliver solution,” Mark Finocchiaro, Managing Partner and Director, Chemist Warehouse Group said.

The solution was developed in four-weeks by Melbourne-based technology provider Cohesio Group and the first stage has been rolled out across all of Chemist Warehouse’s stores in Australia, with New Zealand set to follow.

Chemist Warehouse and Cohesio Group have worked together since 2017, with Chemist Warehouse deploying Cohesio’s dedicated retail software, Ignito, to power its Click and Collect processes.

Since Chemist Warehouse introduced Cohesio’s Ignito software solution in 2017, the retailer has increased order fulfilment throughput rates by up to 30 per cent and has since used the software to fulfil up to 150,000 online orders a month.

In order to gain faster fulfilment times, Cohesio developed a solution whereby the picking and packing of online orders is done in store, instead of from a central distribution centre (DC).

“Chemist Warehouse stores are unique in that they tend to be very large facilities and hold a huge amount of inventory. We recognised that this created the perfect opportunity to fulfil orders in store, rather than from a DC,” Rizan Mawzoon, Head of Transformation at Cohesio Group said.

“This kind of fulfilment is on the rise as e-commerce continues to take up a larger percentage of the retail spend. We knew this kind of approach would work very well for Chemist Warehouse and we’re absolutely thrilled with the results,” Nishan Wijemanne, CEO of Cohesio Group said.

When a customer selects an order on the Chemist Warehouse website or app, the Chemist Warehouse Order Management System (OMS) will check the stock levels in the stores closest to that customer to fulfil the order.

The app will also profile the consumer and recognise if they have previously visited or ordered from a particular local store.

“The system then sends a message to the store inventory team and communicates which orders are for Click and Deliver, and which are for Click and Collect,” Rizan said.

“We recognise the critical role that we play in keeping Australians healthy and giving them access to essential goods for the benefit of their health. We knew we needed to come up with a solution that reduced anxiety and risk for the most vulnerable members of our communities. Cohesio rose to the challenge and we are proud to be able to keep serving our customers with flexible and convenient delivery options,” Mark Finocchiaro, Managing Partner and Director, Chemist Warehouse Group concluded.

Cohesio Group is part of international technology group Körber. Kӧrber’s supply chain expertise, spanning software to materials handling equipment, also includes Aberle, Aberle Software, Cirrus Logistics, Consoveyo, DMLogic, HighJump, inconso, Otimis, Langhammer, Riantics and Voiteq. Mexico Telecommunication Giant, Alestra, Deploys Bright Pattern Contact Center Software for CENACED’s Telehealth Services During COVID-19

Alestra, deploys Bright Pattern Contact Center for nonprofit, CENACED, to offer remote psychological teleassistance services during the pandemic

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, California, July 15, 2020 — CENACED, a non-profit healthcare organization, has deployed Bright Pattern as their cloud-based contact center software provider amid the COVID-19 pandemic. CENACED uses Bright Pattern to offer free telehealth services to help citizens in Mexico dealing with stress during the quarantine. They have also moved agents and counselors to a remote model to protect the safety of their employees during the pandemic.

VIDEO EMBEDDED: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKZKmhY6KtQ&feature=youtu.be

A recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that the pandemic has negatively affected the mental health of 56 percent of adults. In April, texts to a US federal emergency mental-health line were up 1,000 percent from the year before. The situation is particularly dire for certain vulnerable groups—health-care workers, COVID-19 patients with severe cases, and people who have lost loved ones. CENACED is working with Bright Pattern, Alestra, and Bright Pattern partner, Call It Once, to bring telehealth counseling services to impacted people in Mexico to help people deal with the current health crisis.

CENACED offers free psychological telecare to people who have symptoms of stress derived from quarantine and with Bright Pattern’s virtual call center technology are now handling 120 cases per hour and serving almost 50,000 people per month. Alestra, Bright Pattern, and Call It Once joined CENACED in this critical initiative, enabling a teleassistance contact center in the cloud as shown in this video showing the solution in action. Per CENACED this cloud contact center was deployed in “record time” and is “a technology initiative that changes lives”:

“Bright Pattern has helped global companies during the pandemic by providing a 100% virtual platform allowing customers to seamlessly transition to remote teams,” said Michael McCloskey, CEO of Bright Pattern. “Countries in both Asia and Europe have also used Bright Pattern to help with COVID contact tracing but this is the first Bright Pattern powered contact center that is helping offer telehealth services during the pandemic as well.”

“Today, the world is facing challenging times. People and companies are taking the lead in collaborating in a more personalized way leveraging innovative technology,” said Ana Llano, Regional Manager, Latin America, Bright Pattern. “With our help, CENACED was able to deploy a hybrid contact center with onsite and remote agents quickly thanks to the ease-of-use of the Bright Pattern platform. Agents were ready to provide personalized virtual counseling services and psychological teleassistance to Mexican citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. At Bright Pattern, we are proud to collaborate with our partners and help CENACED with this innovative use of technology focused on helping people and keeping agents safe at home.”

The New Face of AI: Presagen’s Federated Learning algorithm creates higher performing AI than traditional centralized learning

SAN FRANCISCO, July 14, 2020 — AI Healthcare company Presagen has developed a novel Federated Learning technique that can create better performing AI than traditional centralized training approaches.

Federated Learning is a technique that allows AI to train on data distributed in different locations throughout the world, without having to move or centralize the data, in order to protect data privacy. Presagen’s patent-pending approach, called Decentralized AI Training, has AI traveling to the data rather than data traveling to the AI.

Presagen’s Co-Founder and Chief Scientist Dr Jonathan Hall said “With Decentralized AI Training, the AI travels to the data, trains, and then moves to the next data source. Only the AI, which represents general learnings from the data, is shared, and never the private data themselves. This allows our team to train AI on private patient data that we never see.”

An unexpected and exciting result showed that Decentralized AI Training can achieve greater accuracy than training on the same data using the traditional centralized approach. When the data are of poor quality, the technique becomes self-correcting and accuracy improvements of over 10% have been achieved.

Dr Michelle Perugini, Co-Founder and CEO said “This result is critical for developing commercial AI products. Real world problems like healthcare are not Kaggle competitions. Data are inherently poor quality due to subjectivity or clinical uncertainty. Importantly, when you cannot personally see or verify the data, you are exposed to adversarial attacks where data contributors intentionally insert poor quality data. It is important for the AI to handle these situations robustly and automatically for you. This reduces the need to manually process, clean and verify data, which is a huge expense for AI companies, and can also infringe on the privacy of patients.”

A CB Insights Report, Artificial Intelligence Trends To Watch In 2020, quotes the CEO of Google Sundar Pichai saying “On user privacy and control, it’s always been a big focus for us…Initiative is underway for example like federated learning for almost three years…I think it’s one of the most important areas we are working on.”

Google has its own patented Federated Learning technique originally designed for running AI on individual mobile phones. Presagen’s alternative technique was designed for distributed nodes and clusters of unbalanced data from data sources (e.g. clinics), ensuring no movement or sharing of private data whilst maintaining scalability and efficiency.

Presagen Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Dr Don Perugini said “Federated Learning will become pivotal for AI companies operating in the healthcare industry to build commercially scalable AI medical products. Scalable and unbiased AI need diverse datasets to train on, which represent different patient demographics and clinical settings. However, health privacy laws in many countries prevent private clinical data leaving the country of origin. Federated Learning allows AI to train on a globally diverse dataset, without having to move or centralize the data, to create AI products that clinics and patients anywhere in the world can use and rely on.”

Presagen’s Federated Learning is supported by Presagen’s AI Open Projects initiative, which is currently focused on the underserved women’s health sector (Femtech). Presagen announces a call out for “projects”, which are specific medical products that are being developed, to clinics globally to contribute data. Annotated and verified data from clinics, in a pre-specified format, can be “connected” easily by clinics via the drag and drop function onto Presagen’s online Clinical Data Portal. Data remain on secure local cloud servers within the country of origin, ready for decentralized AI training. This also shifts the effort of data labeling and pre-processing onto to clinics, who have the right expertise, which eliminates the large cost and barrier for AI companies. In return for contributing labeled data and clinical trial support, Presagen offers royalties on the global sales of the product once commercialized. This allows clinics of any size, anywhere, to monetize their data without the technical or commercial cost and risk.

Presagen’s first AI medical product, Life Whisperer, is already in use globally by IVF clinics. Life Whisperer uses AI to identify which embryos in IVF are likely to lead to a successful pregnancy. The assessment is conducted on single static images of embryos. In a published international clinical study Life Whisperer performed 25% better than current manual embryo assessment methods. Life Whisperer was built on globally diverse data from clinics in multiple countries.

Presagen has recently developed a range of patent-pending AI technologies which drives a fundamental paradigm shift in developing commercially scalable AI products for real-world problems, that apply beyond healthcare and to AI more generally.

Dr Michelle Perugini said “We are excited that over the coming weeks and months we will present to the world the suite of technologies which we believe advance the field of AI. These technologies will allow Presagen to build scalable AI products that are more commercially viable and technically superior, and thus market dominating. This is vital in Presagen’s journey to become world-leaders in AI Enhanced Healthcare and a dominant player in the AI in Femtech market globally. More importantly we see it as an opportunity to change, lead, and dominate the AI industry more broadly.”
