What is Samsung Pay?
Samsung Pay is the South Korean company’s approach to digital credit and rewards systems. The mobile payment service utilises technologies available in all Samsung flagships starting with the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+. Samsung pay uses the company’s proprietary MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) and the readily available NFC (Near Field Communications) technologies to enable mobile payments. This means that even older terminals without NFC or Paywave technology are compatible. This makes Samsung Pay one of the most accessible mobile digital payment platforms.
The service initially entered an open beta exclusively to Maybank customers in late January. Before that, the service was under a closed beta available to select Samsung and Maybank customers. With the public launch, the service will be made available to customers from banks such as CIMB, Standard Chartered and Citibank among other banking partners.
Samsung Pay is currently compatible with the Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy A7 (2016), Galaxy A5 (2016) and the recently launched Samsung Galaxy A5 and A7 (2017).
