Swatch is still making wearables!
Well, we thought it was the end of the discussion regarding Swatch joining the wearable tech industry this year. This especially so after the veteran watch maker was quick to deny collaborating with Apple in the iWatch project. However, we stand corrected.
It seems that the Swiss watchmaker has plans of its own and has announced that it is planning to launch its very own fitness tracker. The company’s CEO Nick Hayek revealed to the Swiss media that plans for a wearable device by the company is underway. According to Hayek, “it will remain a watch, but will have all today’s usual functions to monitor physical fitness.” Swatch’s plan is simple – combine fitness tracking sensors into its pre-existing Swatch Touch lineup which was launched in 2011.
Swatch has been quite adamant in turning down partnerships with other tech companies and has opted to be independent in relying on its own software. However, the 2011 Swatch Touch does not really live up to the elegance and sophistication that Swatch is known for. The chunky plastic device let many down a few years ago.
And it is because of that, we are praying that Swatch at least adds its signature touch to the pre-existing line up and not just take it as it is. It will be even better if a whole new design is planned for the fitness tracker.
