Sony e-ink Watch, a Fashion Statement
A while back there was a rumour of a project to make watches using electronic paper, or in other words e-ink. The project was named FES e-ink with vague ties to Sony. Recently though the Sony has confirmed that it has direct involvement in the project. According to a Sony spokesperson the actual project was called ‘Fashion Entertainments’. The purpose of the project was simple, to research and develop the e-ink as a fashion product application.
If you are wondering what e-ink or electronic paper is; it is not actual paper or made of one. It is basically a flexible display that only produces very select colours. The first wide application of the e-ink is Amazon’s wide choice of e-readers. It has never been seen in the light of a fashion accessory until now though.
The current FES e-ink project stands at the prototyping stage. At this stage they say that there are about 24 different user selectable patterns to choose from just by an input gesture. So basically you are buying 24 different watches in one FES e-ink watch, you even get to select your own patterns. Of course the greatest feature of the e-ink watch is that power consumption is at a very minimal which means batteries could last super long unlike the current lines of smartwatches, but then again this is not meant to be a smartwatch.
Sony previously kept their name as far away as they can from this project to gauge the real value of this product without Sony’s name. Well as it stands the product has garnered 3.5 million Japanese Yen (MYR 104,210.00) in just three weeks through crowd-funding surpassing the 2 million Japanese Yen (MYR 60,000.00) target.
The Fashion Entertainment project apparently will not stop at watch alone, they are already developing e-ink to be applied into everyday things like ties, hats, paper holders, and others. To say the very least they are still coming up with interesting concepts to be pushed out in the future for our use. Here is the thing though, despite the watch being in prototype stage Sony still refuses to comment on the availability or the price range it will be sitting at. Based on the crowd-funding amount and the fact that it is Sony though gives us a rough estimate that this product would be available before the end of this year and price would be at a premium.
