Samsung had all the right ideas for their smartwatch Gear S2. Prove? It was actually one of the most popular smartwatches out there along with the Apple Watches and Moto 360s. It’s only downfall in our opinion was how Tizen on the Gear S2 still feels plenty unpolished. Display was a little bit on the small side to us. While that leaves plenty to be desired, there is plenty of room for improvement. Samsung actually took a while before releasing Gear S2 after the first Gear S but the replacement model for the Gear S2 though; Samsung took no time to work on it.
What We Know
So we know that there is going to be a follow-up model for Samsung’s already popular Gear S2. The question now is how much do we know about the upcoming model. For one, we know that the model in development is code-named “Solis”. Solis, if you go to Google Translate and translate from Spanish means Sun. Other than being an indication of the highly probable round face of the watch it has plenty related to the previously Gear S2 code-named “Orbis” or Orbit in English. Of course, we do expect to see the brilliant rotating bezel making a come back in this upcoming device.
We also have reports of what their model numbers are. Reports do point to five different model numbers which could also mean that there are five different versions of the upcoming “Solis” device. The model numbers that surfaced are SM-R760, SM-R765, SM-R770, SM-R765V, and SM-R765S. As of yet there are no confirmed reports about what the model numbers mean but the reports do speculate that the SM-R765V and SM-R765S are carrier-specific variants of the smartwatch. Specifically models for Verizon and Sprint; which also means we might not see those two in this part of the world.
We also know that it will be pretty much powered by Samsung’s very own Tizen OS. Of course the Tizen OS on this device will come with a slew of improvements on its own. Though personally we would love to see an Android Wear version of the Gear S device it does not look like that would happen anytime soon. We may never know though with the current rate of adaptation and increasing popularity of Android Wear.
What We Do Not Know
What we cannot confirm now is what this new device might be called. Everyone else, us included are calling it the Gear S3. In terms of sense the Gear S3 is the successor to the Gear S2 so it does make plenty of sense. But then again Samsung’s new Galaxy Note device is rumoured to be labelled as a 7 instead of a 6. Do not quote us on this but Samsung might have forgotten how to count with this one as well and go with Gear S7.
What else do we not know about the device. Let’s see. We are guessing that it will come with the same 1.2-inch display that adorned the Gear S2. Emphasize on the word ‘guessing’ though. There are no official words or reports about the screen sizes or how the three variants of the device might look like so we cannot confirm these speculations too. Though there are already some supposed leaked photos that shows that the “Solis’ may not be bigger than 1.2-inch. We do think that 1.2-inch is a little bit too small though.
We also cannot actually confirm how it would look even though there was supposedly leaked photos of the device. From the photos spotted by SamMobile the device looked very much, as per described by SamMobile as well like a Rolex. We do agree on that much. Except that with 1.2-inch it might be slightly too small to look like a proper Rolex. If it does look like a Rolex though it might attract some unwanted attention from the highly regarded Swiss watchmaker. But the leaked images might indicate that Samsung might have collaborated with Rolex to make their new Gear S3 which would automatically add to its cool factor.
Now comes the question of when will the device launch. We do not know. There are speculations that Samsung will launch the device within this year itself. There are also speculations on the device launching next year instead. Reports do point to a nearer launch date before the end of the year though. You can see the supposed leaked photos in the tweet after the break so you can be the judge of it. Do let us know what you think though. Would you like bigger screens on the Gear S3? How do you think it’ll look? Does the photos look authentic? Does it look good? What would you like to see on the Gear S3? Do you think it will be called the Gear S3 at all?
