Sony Announces PlayLink for the PlayStation 4
The Sony Playstation 4 is the current king of the hill when it comes to gaming consoles. This is even more apparent in markets like Malaysia where other consoles such as the XBOX and Nintendo Switch are struggling to keep up. The success of the PlayStation 4 is largely attributed to the number of exclusive game titles and the large array of games the console has as well as the official support present in Malaysia.
Sony has taken the stage at E3 2017 to announce a new way to experience games on the Playstation 4 – the PlayLink. While other manufacturers tried proprietary propreitary second screen experience, Sony is taking advantage of the devices we already have at our disposal. PlayLink will allow Playstation 4 owners to have a second screen experience using the powerful tablets and smartphone already at their disposal.
PlayLink combines the smartphones or tablets, the PlayStation 4 and television to provide a unique experience which takes advantage of the devices’ touchscreen and camera capabilities. PlayLink will turn any smartphone or tablet into a versatile controller allowing interactions using gestures such as pinch, swipe, drag, tilt, and rotate or even interactions such as taking a selfie and doodling.
While the PlayLink service brings a seamless experience, Sony is kicking off the new experience with a few exclusive titles. The new PlayLink games are designed to bring new life to (couch) cooperative games. According to Sony, “PlayLink titles are designed to be played in group settings, allowing for a truly fun and dynamic experience.”
The first game in the PlayLink range will be a new title called “That’s You!”. The game is a comedy quiz which will make you and up to five of your friends get to know each other a little better and find out what you think of each other. The game will feature over 1,000 varied questions and challenges which take advantage of the PlayLink features completely. The game will be available to PlayStation Plus members free of charge starting July 4th although we aren’t certain if this extends to Asian accounts.
In addition to “That’s You!”, Sony revealed another four titles which will be coming to PlayLink later in the year.
Hidden Agenda is a narrative-driven adventure which will allow up to six players to take part. Although not all of the players will be working towards the same objective.
Knowledge is Power is a trivia game which puts six players against each other trying to outsmart each other. The game is filled power plays and challenges which will keep players on their toes.
Frantics is a game made of arcade-style minigames which will allow up to four players to face off in a variety of challenges. Players will need to bluff, battle, negotiate and co-operate to emerge victorious. But beware, the mischevious host, The Fox, may just stir up some trouble.
SingStar Celebration will allow you to sing your heart out. The title takes advantage of an optional peripheral, the SingStar Mic, or the SingStar Mic App on smartphones to allow up to eight players to belt their favourite tunes.
This is just the beginning for the new PlayLink feature for PlayStation 4. It will be compatible for both iOS and Android devices. It will be really interesting to see how developers take advantage of the service to bring unique experiences to their games moving forward.
