[IFA 2017] Sony Announces MDR-1000X Successors With 1000X family
Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin 2017 (IFA 2017) is one of the biggest industrial shows around for the 2017 season of gadgets. Obviously, plenty of manufacturers would want to be a part of that show. Sony, as one of the world’s largest electronics brand would not want to miss this show too. This time last year at IFA 2016 Sony unveiled the highly acclaimed MDR-1000X, the darling of noise cancelling headphones. It was also claimed to be one of the best ones the Japanese electronics giant have ever made.
Of course the success and quality of the MDR-1000X should not come as a surprise when you consider Sony’s excellent history with personal audio products – especially wireless headphones. The wireless bluetooth headphones though is already about a year old and it is time for a replacement. In this year’s IFA 2017 Sony announced not just one personal audio product to replace the MDR-1000X; they announced a series of three to replace the iconic wireless noise cancelling headphones.
First up is the WH-1000XM2 over-the-ear noise cancelling wireless headphones. This is the true MDR-1000X replacement. While being visually nearly identical the WH-1000XM2 gets the new Atmospheric Pressure Optimising feature that basically adjusts the heapdhone’s noise cancelling based on your surrounding pressure. That feature is especially useful in flights. Battery life has been improved to 30 hours of continuous wireless listening. You can extend that to 40 hours of noise cancelling experience by using an audio cable. It has quick charging too so you get 70 minutes of battery life with just 10 minutes on the charging outlet. It still has all the other great features that made the MDR-1000X a favourite among travellers.
Then there is the WI-1000X behind-the-neck wireless noise cancelling headphones. This slightly more compact package offers maximum stylishness, portability, and battery life at up to 10 hours of wireless listening with noise cancelling on. It also features the same Atmospheric Pressure Optimising function like its bigger brother, the WH-1000XM2. Plug it via audio cable into your smartphone or the in-flight entertainment system and the noise cancelling can last up to 14 hours. With anything that comes with a cable there comes the annoyance of cable management. This comes with a neat zip-style cable management that would make life way easier though. It comes with a hybrid Balanced Amarture and 9mm dynamic drivers to bring you the best audio possible in that form of package. Those powerful drivers also support High Resolution Audio, LDAC, DSEE HX and S-Master HX so this headphone really has you covered.
The last of the personal audio series is the WF-1000X. This is Sony’s answer to highly portable, completely wireless personal audio. The minimalist approach to the WF-1000X is not a new concept if you have to ask. However it is the first from Sony’s stables. It packs a 6mm driver which may not sound a lot but this Sony packs quite a bit of punch for its size. It is also a noise cancelling headphone so 6mm could be more than enough punch for its size. It’s connected via Bluetooth and is supposed to seamlessly connect to your device the moment you take it out of the case. The earphone itself packs 3 hours of charge as it is but the case can charge it twice over giving it a total of up to 9 hours of listening time.
With the new devices you can control them through the Sony Headphones Connect app available for free on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The app allows you to control things like adaptive listening which utilises your smarphone’s accelerometer sensor to detect your current activity. That will then translate to adjustments to music and sound settings that will best suit your activity and environment. The WF-1000X wireless earphones, WH-1000XM2 behing-the-neck noise cancelling earphones, and WH-1000XM2 over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones will be available in Malaysia October 2017 onward. There are no confirmed prices just yet but we will be sure to update you when we do find out – watch this space. Press release after the break.

(KUALA LUMPUR, 31 August 2017) – Sony launches three new variations of wireless headphones with industry-leading noise cancellation technology in the 1000X series, for you to escape the noise around you and focus on the music you want to hear.
The star of the show is the truly wireless style WF-1000X, completely free of wires and fitting snugly in your ear while incorporating industry-leading noise cancelling technology.
