The square format film is the pinnacle of photography. We’re kidding, it is not. But it is an interesting frame for photography. It is a popular format though. Why? One app – Instagram.
Yes, that ever so popular photo sharing app revolutionised photography format with the 1:1 ratio that they were stuck with for the longest time. Posting photos on Instagram used to mean that you would have to think in a square frame. Though that may not be the frame of choice for pro-photographers it is a widely accepted format for social media. Somehow people still managed to make it look good.
That paved a path for Fujifilm in a way. Behold the Instax SQUARE SQ10 hybrid camera. A sort of digital Instax camera with a display to choose your photos and edit them with funky filters. It prints, well you have guessed it, square 1:1 format instant films. Now you can hold an instagram photos in your hands; nice.
All that technology though comes at a price as we reviewed it here. For an Instax, it was not cheap. That is why today Fujifilm launched the Instax SQUARE SQ6. The best part, as they launched it today, Malaysia is the only country outside of Japan to get this unique product.
So, the Fujifilm Instax SQUARE SQ6 then (such long name), what is it? For one it is Fujifilm’s new square format instant film camera. A little sister to the digital displayed SQ10 if you might. Compared to the SQ10, this little sister is completely analogue save for the LED display that tells you your selected shooting mode.
There are three shooting modes that comes with the Instax SQUARE SQ6 to cover every possible shooting conditions; double exposure mode, macro mode, and landscape mode. Those grear photos will then be printed on a 62mm by 62mm 1:1 form factor canvas that is the instant film.
There is three flash filters that comes with the camera to enhance your creative flair even further. Of course an Instax is never complete without a selfie mirror for you to take selfies. You even can set the timer up to 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button to give yourself and your friends time to pose.
Interestingly, unlike the other Fujifilm Instax cameras the SQUARE SQ6 does not rely on teo AA batteries. Instead it works with a lithium-ion battery that can power the camera up to 300 shots (30 instax SQUARE 10-pack). The camera comes with two of them in fact so start buying those Instax SQUARE packs.
The Fujifilm Instax SQUARE SQ6 will be available very soon across the nation via Fujifilm’s official retailers and their own Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop. The new camera will retail at MYR598 as an introductory price. It comes in three colours – Blush Gold, Graphite Gray, and Pearl White.
