Work, work, work, work is annoying enough in the office. In this day and age where technology is the biggest driver to our daily work it can be very frustrating when your PC does not work to facilitate your work. It gets even more frustrating if your PC works but is just too slow. That is working in the office. What if you travel plenty for work though? That is a completely different ballgame.
Travelling usually makes working a lot less effective. It bogs you down most of the time in terms of productivity. That is always the case especially if you have all your equipment in the office. Even if you are carrying a portable PC too, it can be very frustrating because you need to keep plugging it into some outlet and stay there, when you need to go to the loo you have to leave your things unattended which is not an option.
There is a better way to be productive when you are on the road though. Here are 5 things to consider for you to be more productive when you are on the road.
1. Light, Light, Light
One of the things about working and getting work done on the go is the heft that you have to carry with you. It does not make sense for you to bring out a whole desktop PC with its monitors, and keyboard, and mouse, and the actual tower itself to go work in a cafè. It makes even less sense to go down to your favourite coffee shop downstairs to order ‘Kopi Tarik’ and set up your whole desktop PC on that table hogging the only power plug-in the whole of the shop.
The only solution to that is to have a portable PC. Portable PCs now can weigh slightly below 1kg and that is already a feat of its own. But what if we tell you can go even lighter?
You can go lighter with a smartphone that can do everything. Technically smartphones of today can do nearly everything and is as powerful as a PC. Also all your communications are done via the phone anyway, so you have an all-in-one device in your pocket already.
What? You need a bigger display and a proper keyboard? Why not. Get an external portable monitor that weighs less than 800g, get a Bluetooth Keyboard that probably less than half that weight, plug them into your smartphone; voila. The Samsung Galaxy Note9 especially is good at that with Screen Mirroring and DeX. Really all you need is a portable monitor, and a wireless keyboard.
2. Battery Life is everything
Working on the go means that you cannot stay at one particular place for a long time. Every single moment too you are in a different location for work. One thing we found that makes it difficult for us to be productive when we are working remotely is the constant need to charge your device. That also means you have to keep finding a charging port somewhere somehow and plug your devices in. That is not an option if you want to get things done on the go.
Most laptops today that is designed for remote work has the battery life to cope with a full day of work outside the office. However, as we have mentioned before a notebook PC with a large battery could be quite hefty. Even the lightest of the notebook PCs that would last you a full working day would set you back quite a bit of money and will weigh north of 900g. Plus it is an extra thing you need to carry with you when you do go out and about.
If you stick to going about light and easy with just a smartphone that can do everything; say a Samsung Galaxy Note9 you have about a full working day of battery life from the large 4,000mAh Lithium Ion battery from this thing. That is a full day of an all-in-one device for you, in your pockets, with no extra bags or pouches to carry. You can even make phone calls and all sorts of mobile phone stuff with the device without flipping it on a table and work.
3. Integration is Key
Managing plenty of things is a nightmare in the office. Having a cluttered desk in the office is quite normal, but managing that mess can be quite tiresome sometimes. It is also especially tiring when you are trying to manage your email on your PC, then you need to manage phone calls from the fixed line, then your own smartphone, then look at the papers you print for the next meeting. It is not only tiring, it gets annoying.
That is only in the office though. Imagine doing that outside of the office when you are on the go. You have to manage two smartphones, a notebook PC, your notebook, and a bunch of loose sheets of paper that is in your folder held by your hands. You only have two hands and can only handle so much with your physical two hands. You negate all that with one smartphone that supports dual SIM cards.
The Samsung Galaxy Note9 is perfect for the job. If you get a Samsung Galaxy Note9 with 512GB, which in our opinion is a little overkill, you end up with a storage space that is as big as some of the ultrabook offerings for less than half the price. You also get the same amount of RAM as some of these ultrabooks. But beyond that you get to have two SIM cards in the smartphone.
Instead of managing two smartphones you are only managing one with two numbers. Instead of handling a big PC in front of your face on the table, you can look at your brilliantly bright display under the sun while standing in-line to get your Chicken Rice. While flipping through 13 pages in report, you are typing your emails while looking at the report (dual-screen).
4. Remote Access to Necessary Apps is a Must
The worst thing about going about for work is that you cannot get access to all your essentials. You always have to go back to your workplace to get something done. Well we are living in 2018 now and the most important thing we need is internet connection. We cannot live without that, and you always think of going back to the office too when you need to get something done.
What about if you do not? The modern PCs of today are powerful enough to have all the running apps you need in the office. The mobile PCs are really bringing the office experience out of the office, like literally. You can work on documents on the go with the introduction of the notebook PCs. You can even edit videos on all of these rigs, provided these things can get quite heavy. The only issue is that you need a wireless network connection in the form of a WiFi. These days you can rely on your own smartphone’s hotspot. But why not rely on your smartphone entirely?
Yes, why not? We mentioned earlier that most smartphones today packs a punch as big as a lot of PCs. There are also productivity apps that are optimised for smartphone use like Microsoft Office suite. You can even get your emails done and edit 4K videos with your smartphones. It also has internet connection on its own, provided you get a data plan. There are plenty of great data plans these days from the service providers and it only makes sense for you to get one since you are out and about so much. So, yes work on your smartphones; since it already does everything from your emails to your video editing.
5. You Really Need a PC
Back to square one. You do really need a workhorse to work on the go and nothing beats the power of a proper PC obviously. The integrated keyboard, the flexibility it gives you and what not.
We are at the point where our smartphones packs as much punch though. Despite that you cannot fully harness that power in the office sometimes because they are literally not designed for the office. There is one device that is though; the Samsung Galaxy Note9.
The Samsung Galaxy Note9 comes with something called the Desktop eXperience or DeX in short. It works the way it sounds, it turns the smartphone into a literal PC in your office. All you need to do, as we mentioned earlier is to plug it into a proper display and DeX launches. That elevates your smartphone experience to a PC one because you get all the full functionality of any desktop version of the apps in the device like Google Chrome and Microsoft Office suite. If you do design work, great you have Adobe Sketch and the S Pen.
We have seen other iterations of a smartphone OS that converts to a desktop OS. None of them works like DeX though. With Samsung’s DeX you really do not need to get another notebook PC or a tower PC. All you need is your Galaxy Note9, a bluetooth keyboard, and mouse. There are even docks that makes the whole experience even better while charging your smarpthone.
We all were waiting for the day these smart pocket devices become smarter than the PCs on our tables. That day has arrived in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Note9.
